A process for preparing a carbapenem, the process comprising the step of treating a solution of a protected carbapenem with hydrogen in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst to form a carbapenem, wherein the protected carbapenem comprises one or more protecting groups selected from the group consisting of unsubstituted benzyl, substituted benzyl, unsubstituted carboxybenzyl, substituted carboxybenzyl, and combinations thereof,wherein the heterogeneous catalyst is a mixed metal catalyst and comprises two Platinum Group Metals (PGM), wherein the two platinum group metals are palladium and platinum, wherein the weight% ratio of platinum to palladium is from 0.001:

  • 20 to 5.0;

    20, andwherein the mixed metal catalyst does not comprise a mixture of the two platinum group metals but comprises the two platinum group metals deposited on the same solid support, wherein the solid support is selected from the group consisting of activated carbon, carbon black and graphite.
