1. A method of manufacturing cement clinker in a long rotary cement kiln having a feed end and a heating end, the heating end being inclined downwardly relative to the feed end, the method comprising the steps of:

  • directing heat from a heat source to a heating end of said kiln;

    feeding a calcium oxide containing stream into the feed end of the kiln to move the stream towards the heating zone of the heating end of the kiln; and

    at the feed end of the kiln, a quantity of coarsely crushed and sized steel slag is added to the material stream so that the material stream and the steel slag move toward the heating end, the steel slag being melted by the heating and diffusing into the material to form cement clinker.
