1. A flow reactor comprising a plurality of walled conduits each having an outer surface for contact with a heat transfer medium, an inlet distribution manifold fluidly connectable to a downstream manifold through channels packed with a heterogeneous catalytic material disposed within each conduit during operation, said walled conduits being located in a sequence of catalyst zones, the length of the zones being the same or different in the axial direction of the conduits, the cross-section of the conduits perpendicular to the axial direction in each zone being substantially uniform, thereby defining a zone volume, the sequence of zones comprising at least two zones such that the cross-section of each downstream zone is different from the cross-section of an adjacent upstream zone.
