1. A method for activating a direct oxidation type fuel cell comprising an anode, a cathode, and a proton-conducting electrolyte membrane interposed between the anode and the cathode, the anode and the cathode each having a catalyst layer on an end face in contact with the proton-conducting electrolyte membrane,the method includes flowing an electric current through the fuel cell from an external power source having a positive electrode and a negative electrode connected to the anode and the cathode of the fuel cell, respectively, while supplying an organic fuel and an inert gas to the anode and the cathode, respectively.
