Scientific Telecommunications LLC’s (SciTel’s) second suit (1:14-cv-01462) names Juniper Networks as a defendant, in a campaign that has so far targeted Ethernet switch providers. The patents-in-suit relate to a networking switch that can forward traffic using layer 3 addressing without a routing protocol (6,058,429, 7,222,188). Nortel Networks previously owned both patents, and Avaya owned the ‘188 patent between 2009 and 2014. SciTel is the current assignee, according to the complaint. Juniper’s network switches are accused of infringing the asserted patents. RPX reviewed the patents-in-suit in an open market opportunity in April 2014 (Trident Traffic – OMA).
