Parity Networks Adds Nokia to New Networking Campaign
New Patent Litigation
Parity Networks LLC has added Nokia (6:16-cv-01367) to its sole litigation campaign, less than a month after filing its first litigation against Huawei (6:16-cv-01306). The Texas-based NPE accuses Nokia of infringing six patents (6,252,848; 6,553,005; 6,738,378; 6,763,394; 7,002,958; 7,107,352) generally related to network traffic management through enterprise routers and software, including the 7750 SR router and the Service Router Operating System (SROS) utilized for that device. Parity’s complaint identifies the allegedly infringing features from these products for each asserted patent, including ingress ports “configured to receive packets from multiple ingress flows” (the ‘848 patent), certain input/output modules (the ‘005 and ‘378 patents), the use of access control lists (ACLs) for packet filtering/dropping (the ‘394 and ‘352 patents), and the use of Multipath Label Switching (MPLS) for packet routing (the ‘958 patent).

New NPE Hits Huawei over Network Traffic Management Patents
Texas-based NPE Parity Networks LLC has filed its first litigation, asserting six patents (6,252,848; 6,738,378; 6,763,394; 7,002,958; 7,103,046; 7,107,352) generally related to network traffic management against Huawei (6:16-cv-01306). The company is accused of infringement through the provision of enterprise network routers that utilize Multipath Label Switching (MPLS), a technology for routing data packets using shorter “labels” rather than longer network addresses. Also at issue are various Huawei gigabit Ethernet switches that include certain traffic management features and processors.

Another Party Brings Declaratory Judgment Action Against SciTel
Comtech EF Data Corp., a subsidiary of Comtech Communications, has filed suit against Scientific Telecommunications LLC (SciTel) seeking declaratory judgments of non-infringement of the four patents (6,519,259, 6,058,429; 6,546,424; 7,222,188) that the NPE has affirmatively asserted against other companies (2:16-cv-03105). The ‘259 patent generally relates to improving packet-based voice communications; the remaining three patents generally concern packet switching between virtual local area networks without necessitating a routing protocol. Comtech’s complaint contends that licensing talks that began between the parties in September 2015 broke down, but it notes that a non-disclosure agreement prevents the public disclosure of further details.

SciTel Asserts Fourth Patent Received in “Sham” Transaction
Scientific Telecommunications LLC (SciTel) has opened up a second litigation campaign, asserting a single patent (6,519,259) generally related to improving packet-based voice communications against VT iDirect (1:16-cv-00436). SciTel accuses the defendant of infringement through provision of satellite communicates via its iDirect Evolution DVB-S2/ACM system. (DVB-S2 is a second generation standard for digital video broadcast by satellite.) The ‘259 patent is the last of the four patents that SciTel received from Trident IP Solutions, LLC in late 2014—in what prior defendants have characterized as a “sham” transaction—to be asserted in litigation.

Juniper Is Newest Target of Scientific Telecommunications
Scientific Telecommunications LLC’s (SciTel’s) second suit (1:14-cv-01462) names Juniper Networks as a defendant, in a campaign that has so far targeted Ethernet switch providers. The patents-in-suit relate to a networking switch that can forward traffic using layer 3 addressing without a routing protocol (6,058,429, 7,222,188). Nortel Networks previously owned both patents, and Avaya owned the ‘188 patent between 2009 and 2014. SciTel is the current assignee, according to the complaint. Juniper’s network switches are accused of infringing the asserted patents. RPX reviewed the patents-in-suit in an open market opportunity in April 2014 (Trident Traffic – OMA).
