Funded Hardin and Hill Sue Samsung Again

Last week, Magistrate Judge Roy S. Payne handed down a claim construction order in a case that named inventors Ryan Hardin and Andrew Hill filed in July 2021 against Samsung over three of their patents. Litigation against the other defendant in the campaign, LG Electronics (LGE), ended last month, after multiple stays to finalize an “agreement in principle to settle” that case. Now, Hardin and Hill have hit Samsung again, asserting two additional patents from the same family in a second Eastern District of Texas complaint (2:22-cv-00344), the family generally related to delivering exclusive content to a mobile device based on its geographic location.

Also during Q3, several NPEs began new campaigns financed by third parties, including an established litigation finance firm as well as a hedge fund.

Named Inventors Target Intersection of Geofencing and Mobile Devices in New Campaign

Named inventors Ryan Hardin and Andrew Hill have kicked off litigation over three of their patents, which are generally related to delivering exclusive content to a mobile device based on its geographic location. The defendants are LG Electronics (LGE) (2:21-cv-00289) and Samsung (2:21-cv-00290), each accused of infringement through the use of “geofencing or location information in its advertising or content delivery efforts or its own applications it develops” with mobile devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets, and/or watches).
