Abstract

The present disclosure discloses a passive optical network (PON) user terminal comprising a passive optical network interface unit (PONIU) having access to a PON system, a service data distribution unit (SDDU) connected to the PONIU for distributing service data, a plurality of service processing units (SPUs) for receiving and accordingly processing the service data distributed by the SDDU, a power source for providing power to the above units, and a power supply control unit (PSCU) for controlling the activating/deactivating of the energy-saving power supply to the SPUs, the SDDU, and the PONIU. The present disclosure further provides a method for controlling the PON power supply and for reporting the power supply state. The present disclosure allows control of the energy usage of the PON user terminal to save power when a service in the PON user terminal is not used or when the user terminal uses a backup power source to supply power.

Claims

19. A passive optical network (PON) component comprising:

a power source;

a service processing unit (SPU) configured to process service data; and

a power supply control unit (PSCU) in communication with the power source and the SPU, wherein the PSCU is configured to control the power supplied from the power source to the SPU.

20. The component of claim 19 wherein the PSCU disconnects or decreases the power supply to the SPU.

21. The component of claim 19 wherein the PSCU activates an energy-saving power supply to the SPU when the SPU is not in use, and deactivates the energy-saving power supply to the SPU when the SPU is needed.

22. The component of claim 19 further comprising:

a PON interface unit (PONIU) configured to receive the service data from a PON system;

a plurality of the SPUs in communication with the PSCU, wherein the SPUs are configured to process different types of service data; and

a service data distribution unit (SDDU) in communication with the PONIU and the SPUs, wherein the SDDU is configured to distribute the service data to the SPUs.

23. The component of claim 22 wherein the PSCU activates an energy-saving power supply to the SPUs, the PONIU, and the SDDU when the SPUs are not in use, and deactivates the energy-saving power supply to one of the SPUs, the PONIU, and the SDDU when the one SPU is needed.

24. The component of claim 22 wherein the power source comprises a main power source and a backup power source, and wherein the PSCU activates an energy-saving power supply to at least one of the SPUs when the main power source is disconnected and the backup power source is providing power.

25. The component of claim 24 wherein the PSCU activates the energy-saving power supply to at least one of the SPUs when the backup power source drops to a preset level.

26. The component of claim 22 wherein the SPUs comprise a video SPU, a voice SPU, and a data access SPU.

27. A passive optical network (PON) component comprising a processor configured to implement a method comprising:

activating an energy-saving power supply to a service processing unit (SPU) when the SPU is not in use; and

deactivating the energy-saving power supply to the SPU when the SPU is needed.

28. The component of claim 27 wherein the PON component comprises a passive optical network interface unit (PONIU), a service data distribution unit (SDDU), and a plurality of the SPUs.

29. The component of claim 28 wherein the method further comprises:

activating the energy-saving power supply to the SPUs, the PONIU, and the SDDU when the SPUs are not in use; and

deactivating the energy-saving power supply to one of the SPUs, the PONIU, and the SDDU when the one SPU is needed.

30. The component of claim 27 wherein the SPUs comprise a video SPU, a voice SPU, and a data access SPU.

31. The component of claim 27 wherein the energy-saving power supply disconnects or decreases the power supply to the SPU.

32. A method for reporting a power supply state in a passive optical network (PON) user terminal, comprising:

sending a message to an optical line terminal (OLT) to alert the OLT of the power supply state change in the PON user terminal.

33. The method of claim 32 wherein the message comprises an action identifier that indicates whether the PON user terminal entered or exited an energy-saving power supply mode, and a PON user terminal identifier that identifies the PON user terminal associated with the message.

34. The method of claim 33 further comprising:

receiving a reply message from the OLT as a response to the message.

35. The method of claim 34 wherein the reply message accepts or rejects the action identifier and accepts or rejects the PON user terminal identifier.

36. The method of claim 32 wherein the OLT does not return a response message to the PON user terminal, but records the power supply state change of the PON user terminal.

37. The method of claim 32 wherein the PON user terminal comprises a plurality of service processing units (SPUs), a passive optical network interface unit (PONIU), and a service data distribution unit (SDDU).

38. The method of claim 37 wherein the energy-saving power supply mode disconnects or decreases the power supply to at least one of the SPUs.
