Abstract

The invention described herein is directed to method of treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, comprising administering an effective amount of an osmolyte by at least one nasal cannula to a subject in need thereof. Also provided is a nasal cannula system for delivering an osmolyte, comprising a nebulizer and tubing having two ends, where the first end of the tubing is connected to the nebulizer and the second end of the tubing is tapered to fit in the nostril of a subject.

Claims

1. A method of treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, comprising administering an effective amount of an aerosolized osmolyte to a subject in need thereof with a nebulizer connected to a nasal cannula.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is cystic fibrosis.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the osmolyte is hypertonic saline.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the osmolyte is delivered by one prong of a nasal cannula.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the osmolyte is delivered by two prongs of a nasal cannula.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the osmolyte is delivered over a period of 8 to 24 hours.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the subject is treated while sleeping.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the nasal cannula is connected to the nebulizer with tubing.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the nasal cannula and the tubing are heated.

10. The method of claim 8, herein the nasal cannula and the tubing are coated.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the nebulizer produces respirable particles.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the respirable particles are 1-5 microns MMD.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the nebulizer has a volume of 240 mL to 2 liters.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the nebulizer does not need to be refilled for a period of 8-24 hours during which the osmolyte is administered to the subject.

15. The method of claim 8, wherein the tubing has an inner diameter of about 3-5 mm and a length of about 2-4 meters.

16. A nasal cannula system for delivering an osmolyte, comprising:

a nebulizer and

tubing, wherein one end of the tubing is connected to the nebulizer and another end of the tubing is tapered to fit in the nostril of a subject.

17. The nasal cannula system of claim 16, wherein the tubing is heated.

18. The nasal cannula system of claim 16, wherein the nebulizer has a volume of 240 mL to 2 liters.

19. The nasal cannula system of claim 16, wherein the tubing has an inner diameter of about 3-5 mm and a length of about 2-4 meters.

20. The nasal cannula system of claim 16, wherein the tubing is coated.
