Abstract

Elements of the present invention relate to systems and methods for selecting a display source light illumination level based on a histogram-weighted error value.

Claims

1. A method for selecting a display source light illumination level, said method comprising:

a) determining a plurality of error vectors wherein each error vector corresponds to a different display source light illumination level;

b) generating an image histogram for an image to be displayed;

c) weighting said error vectors with histogram bin values from said image histogram thereby creating histogram-weighted error values corresponding to said source light illumination levels; and

d) selecting a source light illumination level for said image wherein said selecting is based on said histogram-weighted error values.

2. A method as described in claim 1 wherein said selecting is based on a minimum value of said histogram-weighted error values.

3. A method as described in claim 1 wherein said plurality of error vectors are based on a target output curve and a plurality of display output curves.

4. A method as described in claim 1 wherein said plurality of error vectors are based on a difference between a target output curve and a plurality of display output curves.

5. A method as described in claim 1 wherein said weighting comprises multiplying error vector values in said error vectors by said histogram bin values in said image histogram.

6. A method as described in claim 1 wherein said selecting is based on minimization of said histogram-weighted error values.

7. A method as described in claim 1 wherein said selecting is based on minimization of said histogram-weighted error values and a power consumption constraint.

A method as described in claim 1 wherein said weighting said error vectors comprises multiplying error vector values in said error vectors by said histogram bin values in said image histogram to create histogram-weighted error vector values and said creating histogram-weighted error values comprises taking the sum of all histogram-weighted error vector values for a particular light source illumination level.

9. A method for selecting a display source light illumination level, said method comprising:

a) generating a target output curve for a display;

b) generating a plurality of reference output curves for said display wherein each of said reference output curves corresponds to a different display source light illumination level;

c) determining a plurality of error vectors based on differences between said target output curve and said reference output curves, wherein each of said error vectors corresponds to a different source light illumination level;

d) generating an image histogram for an image to be displayed;

e) weighting said error vectors with histogram bin values from said image histogram thereby creating histogram-weighted error values corresponding to said source light illumination levels; and

f) selecting a source light illumination level for said image wherein said selecting is based on said histogram-weighted error values.

10. A method as described in claim 9 wherein said selecting is based on a minimum value of said histogram-weighted error values.

11. A method as described in claim 9 wherein said error vectors comprise error vector values corresponding to each code value in said image.

A method as described in claim 9 wherein said weighting said error vectors comprises multiplying error vector values in said error vectors by said histogram bin values in said image histogram to created histogram-weighted error vector values and said creating histogram-weighted error values comprises taking the sum of all histogram-weighted error vector values for a particular light source illumination level.

13. A method as described in claim 9 wherein said weighting comprises multiplying error vector values in said error vectors by said histogram bin values in said image histogram.

14. A method as described in claim 9 wherein said selecting is based on minimization of said histogram-weighted error values.

15. A system for selecting a display source light illumination level, said system comprising:

a) an error vector generator for determining a plurality of error vectors wherein each error vector corresponds to a different display source light illumination level;

b) a histogram generator for generating an image histogram for an image to be displayed;

c) a histogram-weighting calculator for weighting said error vectors with histogram bin values from said image histogram thereby creating histogram-weighted error values corresponding to said source light illumination levels; and

d) a selector for selecting a source light illumination level for said image wherein said selecting is based on said histogram-weighted error values.

16. A system as described in claim 15 wherein said selecting is based on a minimum value of said histogram-weighted error values.

17. A method as described in claim 15 wherein said plurality of error vectors are based on a target output curve and a plurality of display output curves.

18. A method as described in claim 15 wherein said plurality of error vectors are based on a difference between a target output curve and a plurality of display output curves.

19. A method as described in claim 15 wherein said weighting comprises multiplying error vector values in said error vectors by said histogram bin values in said image histogram.

20. A method as described in claim 15 wherein said selecting is based on minimization of said histogram-weighted error values.
