1. A method for selecting a display source light illumination level, said method comprising:
- a) determining a plurality of error vectors wherein each error vector corresponds to a different display source light illumination level;
b) generating an image histogram for an image to be displayed;
c) weighting said error vectors with histogram bin values from said image histogram thereby creating histogram-weighted error values corresponding to said source light illumination levels; and
d) selecting a source light illumination level for said image wherein said selecting is based on said histogram-weighted error values.
