Abstract

Service resource items for use in call setup in a telephone system are held on servers that are connected to a computer network which is logically distinct from the telephone system infrastructure; this computer network may, for example, make use of the Internet. Each service item is locatable on the network at a corresponding URI and is associated with a particular telephone number. A mapping is provided between telephone numbers and the URIs of associated service resource items. When it is desired to access a service resource item associated with a particular telephone number, this mapping is used to retrieve the corresponding URI which is then used to access the desired service resource item.

17. A method, comprising:

receiving first data representing a first telephone number;

determining, by a telecommunications system control apparatus, a domain name based on the first telephone number;

generating second data representing the domain name;

after the generating, receiving third data representing a universal resource identifier (URI); and

reading information from a page identified by the URI.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the information represents a second telephone number.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising setting up a call to the second telephone number.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the telecommunications system control apparatus comprises a service control point (SCP).

21. The method of claim 17, wherein the telecommunications system control apparatus is part of a public switched telephone network (PSTN).

22. The method of claim 17, wherein the telecommunications system control apparatus is part of a public land mobile network (PLMN).

23. The method of claim 17, wherein the URI is a universal resource locator (URL).

24. The method of claim 17, wherein determining the domain name comprises parsing the telephone number to determine the domain name.

25. The method of claim 17, wherein the page is a page of the World Wide Web on the Internet.

26. The method of claim 17, wherein the URI contains all digits of the first telephone number.

27. A method, comprising:

receiving a first domain name;

determining, by a computer, a first universal resource identifier (URI) based on the first domain name; and

reading information from a page identified by the first URI.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein the information represents a first telephone number, the method further comprising setting up a call to the first telephone number.

29. The method of claim 27, wherein the computer comprises a database associating a plurality of domain names including the first domain name, with a plurality of URIs including the first URI, and wherein determining comprises the computer sending a query including the first domain name to the database and receiving the first URI from the database.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the database comprises a domain name system (DNS) type database system.

31. The method of claim 27, wherein the page is a page of the World Wide Web on the Internet.

32. A method, comprising:

receiving first data representing a party to be called;

a telecommunications system control apparatus determining a domain name based on the first data;

generating second data representing the domain name;

after the generating, receiving third data representing a universal resource identifier (URI); and

reading information from a page identified by the URI.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein the information comprises a telephone number.

34. The method of claim 33, further comprising setting up a call to the telephone number.

35. The method of claim 32, wherein the telecommunications system control apparatus comprises a service control point (SCP).

36. The method of claim 32, wherein the telecommunications system control apparatus is part of a public switched telephone network (PSTN).

37. The method of claim 32, wherein the telecommunications system control apparatus is part of a public land mobile network (PLMN).

38. The method of claim 32, wherein the URI is a universal resource locator (URL).

39. The method of claim 32, wherein determining the domain name comprises parsing the first data determine the domain name.

40. The method of claim 32, wherein the page is a page of the World Wide Web on the Internet.

41. A method, comprising:

receiving first data representing a first telephone number;

determining, by a telecommunications system control apparatus, a domain name based on the first telephone number;

generating second data representing the domain name;

after the generating, receiving third data representing a universal resource identifier (URI); and

determining a second telephone number based on the URI.

42. The method of claim 41, further comprising setting up a call to the second telephone number.

43. The method of claim 41, wherein the telecommunications system control apparatus comprises a service control point (SCP).

44. The method of claim 41, wherein the telecommunications system control apparatus is part of a public switched telephone network (PSTN).

45. The method of claim 41, wherein the telecommunications system control apparatus is part of a public land mobile network (PLMN).

46. The method of claim 41, wherein the URI is a universal resource locator (URL).

47. The method of claim 41, wherein determining the domain name comprises parsing the telephone number to determine the domain name.

48. The method of claim 41, wherein the URI contains all digits of the first telephone number.

49. A method, comprising:

receiving first data representing a party to be called;

determining, by a telecommunications system control apparatus, a domain name based on the first telephone number;

generating second data representing the domain name;

after the generating, receiving third data representing a universal resource identifier (URI); and

determining a telephone number based on the URI.

50. The method of claim 49, further comprising setting up a call to the telephone number.

51. The method of claim 49, wherein the telecommunications system control apparatus comprises a service control point (SCP).

52. The method of claim 49, wherein the telecommunications system control apparatus is part of a public switched telephone network (PSTN).

55. The method of claim 49, wherein determining the domain name comprises parsing the first data to determine the domain name.

56. A computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions for performing a method, the method comprising:

receiving first data representing a first telephone number;

determining a domain name based on the first telephone number;

generating second data representing the domain name;

after the generating, receiving third data representing a universal resource identifier (URI); and

reading information from a page identified by the URI.

57. A computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions for performing a method, the method comprising:

receiving a first domain name;

determining a first universal resource identifier (URI) based on the first domain name; and

reading information from a page identified by the first URI.

58. A computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions for performing a method, the method comprising:

receiving first data representing a party to be called;

determining a domain name based on the first data;

generating second data representing the domain name;

after the generating, receiving third data representing a universal resource identifier (URI); and

reading information from a page identified by the URI.

59. A computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions for performing a method, the method comprising:

receiving first data representing a first telephone number;

determining a domain name based on the first telephone number;

generating second data representing the domain name;

after the generating, receiving third data representing a universal resource identifier (URI); and

determining a second telephone number based on the URI.

receiving first data representing a party to be called;
