Abstract

An array of LEDs includes first and second rows of LEDs. The LEDs emit light at red, green, and blue wavelengths parallel to an output port, and the light is re-directed by a light reflecting material from directions parallel to the output port toward the output port. The first and second rows are parallel to each other, and the LEDs are powered by pulse width modulated signals that establish a brightness of the LEDs.

13. A method comprising:

directing light from a first row of LEDs primarily parallel to a projection plane defined by a housing, wherein the first row of LEDs provides a mixture of red, green, and blue light and is contained within the housing;

directing light from a second row of LEDs primarily parallel to the projection plane and at a different angle from the first row of LEDs, wherein the second row of LEDs provides a mixture of red, green, and blue light, is contained within the housing, and is substantially parallel to the first row of LEDs;

powering a first group of LEDs contained within the housing with a first current through the first group and a first voltage across the first group; and

powering a second group of LEDs contained within the housing with a second current through the second group and a second voltage across the second group, wherein the first current is equal to the second current, and the first voltage is different from the second voltage.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein powering the first group comprises driving the first current through each of the LEDs of the first group in parallel.

15. The method of claim 13, further comprising porting the housing and the first and second rows of LEDs in fixed relation to each other on a common base structure.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein powering the first group of LEDs comprises powering at least a first portion of the LEDs of the first row, and powering the second group of LEDs comprises powering at least a second portion of the LEDs of the first row.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein powering the first group of LEDs comprises turning the first group of LEDs on and off to set a brightness of the first group of LEDs.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising adjusting the brightness of the first group of LEDs by adjusting a duty cycle of the turning of the first group of LEDs on and off.

19. The method of claim 13, wherein powering the first group of LEDs comprises driving the first group of LEDs with high and low signals to affect a brightness of the first group of LEDs.

20. The method of claim 13, wherein powering the first group of LEDs comprises turning the first group of LEDs on and off with a duty cycle to provide a brightness of the first group of LEDs, and powering the second group of LEDs comprises turning the second group of LEDs on and off with a duty cycle to provide a brightness of the second group of LEDs.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein a duty cycle corresponding to powering the first group of LEDs is different from a duty cycle corresponding to powering the second group of LEDs.

22. The method of claim 13, further comprising directing light from a third row of LEDs primarily parallel to the projection plane and at a different angle from the first and second rows of LEDs, wherein the third row of LEDs provides a mixture of red, green, and blue light and is contained within the housing.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the third row is parallel to the first row.

24. A method comprising:

shining light primarily along a first plane from each LED of a first row of LEDs, contained within a housing, primarily away from an output port of the housing;

shining light primarily along a second plane from each LED of a second row of LEDs, parallel to the first row and contained within the housing, primarily away from the output port, wherein the second plane intersects the first plane;

driving a first group of LEDs, including LEDs of the first row, and a second groups of LEDs, including LEDs of the first row, with first and second power signals, respectively, having equal currents and different voltages, wherein brightness of light from the first and second groups of LEDs is determined by duty cycles of waveforms of the first and second power signals, respectively; and

redirecting the light from each LED of the first and second rows of LEDs toward a substantially planar target surface.

25. The method of claim 24, further comprising adjusting the brightness of light from the first and second groups of LEDs by adjusting pulse widths of the first and second power signals, respectively.

26. The method of claim 24, further comprising shining light primarily along a third plane from each LED of a third row of LEDs, contained within the housing, primarily away from the output port, wherein the third plane intersects the first and second planes.

27. The method of claim 24, wherein light from each of the first, second, and third rows of LEDs comprises a plurality of colors of visible light.

28. The method of claim 27, further comprising shining light primarily along a fourth plane from each LED of a fourth row of LEDs, parallel to the third row and contained within the housing, primarily away from the output port, wherein the fourth plane intersects the second and third planes.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the fourth plane intersects the third plane only along a line.

30. The method of claim 24, wherein the first plane intersects the output port.

31. The method of claim 24, wherein light from each of the first, second, and third rows of LEDs comprises a plurality of colors of visible light.

32. The method of claim 24, wherein redirecting the light comprises reflecting the light off a reflective surface.
