Abstract

Devices for detecting an analyte comprising a redox active analyte sensitive material on a working electrode and computer assisted signal acquisition and processing.

Claims

1. A pH meter device, comprising:

a probe assembly having a first end, a second end and a central axis;

a reference electrode having a frit disposed at the first end of the probe assembly;

a working electrode comprising an analyte sensitive material coupled to a substrate, the analyte sensitive material and the substrate being disposed at the first end of the probe assembly;

a counter electrode disposed at the first end of the probe assembly;

an enclosure disposed at the second end of the probe assembly;

a pre-amplification circuit disposed within the enclosure and electrically coupled to at least one of the reference electrode, the working electrode and the counter electrode; and

a processor electrically coupled to the pre-amplification circuit for detecting an analyte by voltammetry, wherein the reference electrode, the working electrode and the counter electrode are coaxially positioned relative to the central axis, and wherein the pre-amplification circuit scales a signal received from at least one of the reference electrode and the working electrode.

2. The pH meter device of claim 1, wherein the ASM is selected from the group consisting of anthraquinone, phenanthrenequinone, ortho-benzoquinone, N,N′

-diphenyl para-phenylen diamine, anthracene, naphthaquinone, para-benzoquinone, and azobenzene, wherein at least one of R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, R12, R13, and R14 are substituted with a chemical moiety selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen moiety, an alkyl moiety, an aryl moiety, a heteroaryl moiety, an amino moiety, an amido moiety, a carboxyl moiety, a hydroxyl methyl moiety, a carbonyl moiety, an ether moiety and an alkoxy ether moiety.

3. The pH meter device of claim 1, wherein the analyte sensitive material is covalently attached to the substrate via a chemical linker.

4. The pH meter device of claim 1, wherein the analyte sensitive material is physisorbed within the substrate.

5. The pH meter device of claim 1, wherein the substrate is selected from the group consisting of a noble metal material, a semiconductive material, a conductive metal alloy material, a conductive polymeric compound, and a carbon-based material.

The pH meter device of claim 5, wherein the carbon-based material is selected from the group consisting of a carbon allotrope material, a pyrolytic graphite material, graphite, amorphous carbon, carbon black, single-walled carbon nanotubes, multi-walled carbon nanotubes, glassy carbon, boron-doped diamonds, and pyrolized photoresist films.

The pH meter of claim 1, wherein the reference electrode comprises a cartridge assembly coaxially disposed within a portion of the counter electrode, the reference electrode further comprising an electrode wire having a first end and a second end, the first end being electrically coupled to the pre-amplification circuit, and the second end being exposed to an electrolyte solution.

8. The pH meter of claim 7, further comprising a mini reference assembly disposed within the cartridge assembly, the mini reference assembly comprising:

a casing having a first end and a second end, the first end having an opening for receiving a frit member, the casing further containing a second electrolyte solution;

a lead having a first end, a second end and a middle portion, the first end being electrically coupled to the second end of the electrode wire, the second end of the lead being disposed within the second electrolyte solution, and the middle portion of the lead being positioned proximate to the WE, such that the temperature of the lead is substantially similar to the WE.

10. The improved analyte sensitive material of claim 7, wherein at least two adjacent, substituted carbon atoms form at least one of an aryl ring and a heteroaryl ring.

21. The pH meter device of claim 1 further comprising, a clip device for securing the probe assembly to a vessel, the device comprising:

an aperture for receiving a portion of a probe assembly; and

a body coupled to the aperture, the body having a first arm for receiving a rim surface of the vessel such that the aperture is located proximate to an interior of the vessel and the first arm is located proximate to an exterior of the vessel.

The pH meter device of claim 1 further comprising, a storage device comprising an enclosure having a base portion selectively coupled to a cover portion, the base portion having a well for receiving a wetting solution, the cover portion having an aperture for supporting a shaft portion of the probe assembly, the aperture being in approximate alignment with the well such that upon insertion of the probe assembly into the aperture, a tip portion of the probe assembly is submerged in the wetting solution.

9. An improved analyte sensitive material selected from the group consisting of anthraquinone, phenanthrenequinone, ortho-benzoquinone, N,N′

-diphenyl para-phenylen diamine, anthracene, naphthaquinone, para-benzoquinone, and azobenzene, wherein at least one of R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, R12, R13, and R14 are substituted with a chemical moiety selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen moiety, an alkyl moiety, an aryl moiety, a heteroaryl moiety, an amino moiety, an amido moiety, a carboxyl moiety, a hydroxyl methyl moiety, a carbonyl moiety, an ether moiety and an alkoxy ether moiety.

11. A meter device, comprising:

a probe having a plurality of electrodes for detecting a target analyte, the plurality of electrodes including at least one electrode having an analyte sensitive material coupled thereto; and

a pre-amp located in the proximity of and electrically coupled to the plurality of electrodes, wherein the pre-amp electrically scales a signal received from at least one electrode.

12. The meter device of claim 11, further comprising a computer program product for implementing within a computer system a method for detecting an analyte, the computer program product comprising:

a computer readable medium for providing computer program code means utilized to implement the method, wherein the computer program code means is comprised of executable code for implementing the steps for;

transmitting a pre-programmed control voltage first signal from a processor to a preamplifier;

receiving a second signal from a working electrode, the second signal representing a current from the preamplifier;

applying an analysis to the second signal relative to the first signal; and

rendering a value;

wherein the preamplifier further implements the steps of;

comparing an actual potential at the reference electrode with the pre-programmed control voltage first signal from the processor;

adjusting an output signal at a counter electrode such that the actual potential at the reference electrode is approximately equal to the pre-programmed control voltage first signal;

scaling the second signal; and

transmitting the second signal to the processor.

13. The computer program product of claim 12, further comprising the steps of:

executing a first scan to determine a range of the second signal; and

executing a second scan focused on the range determined by the first scan.

14. The computer program product of claim 12, further comprising the steps of:

executing a first scan to render a value; and

executing an interleaved scan to further increase at least one of the accuracy and the precision of the rendered value.

15. The computer program product of claim 14, further comprising a plurality of interleaved scans.

16. The computer program product of claim 12, wherein the analysis comprises at least one of voltammetry and amperometry.

17. A working electrode, comprising:

a substrate; and

an analyte sensitive material coupled to the substrate, the analyte sensitive material being selected from the group consisting of anthraquinone, phenanthrenequinone, ortho-benzoquinone, N,N′

-diphenyl para-phenylen diamine, anthracene, naphthaquinone, para-benzoquinone, 2-(beta-naphthol)methylanthraquinone, 2-N-BOCethylene diamine AQ and azobenzene, wherein at least one of R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, R10, R11, R12, R13, and R14 are substituted with a chemical moiety selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen moiety, an alkyl moiety, an aryl moiety, a heteroaryl moiety, an amino moiety, an amido moiety, a carboxyl moiety, a hydroxyl methyl moiety, a carbonyl moiety, an ether moiety and an alkoxy ether moiety.

18. The working electrode of claim 17, wherein the analyte sensitive material is covalently coupled to the substrate.
