Abstract

The present invention discloses a method for generating elevation maps or images of a tissue layer/boundary with respect to a fitted reference surface, comprising the steps of finding and segmenting a desired tissue layer/boundary; fitting a smooth reference surface to the segmented tissue layer/boundary; calculating elevations of the same or other tissue layer/boundary relative to the fitted reference surface; and generating maps of elevation relative to the fitted surface. The elevation can be displayed in various ways including three-dimensional surface renderings, topographical contour maps, contour maps, en-face color maps, and en-face grayscale maps. The elevation can also be combined and simultaneously displayed with another tissue layer/boundary dependent set of image data to provide additional information for diagnostics.

Claims

2. A method of collecting optical coherence tomography data of an eye, said eye having at least one boundary surface associated therewith, said method comprising;

acquiring an initial set of image data of the eye using an optical coherence tomography (OCT) device, said OCT device including a light source and optical elements to scan the beam over the eye;

identifying a curved boundary surface within the image data;

generating a substantially smoothed reference surface from the boundary surface; and

acquiring further image data by scanning the eye with the beam, wherein the scanning is guided by the contour of the smoothed reference surface.

3. A method as recited in claim 2, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated by fitting the boundary surface.

4. A method as recited in claim 2, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated by smoothing the boundary surface.

5. A method as recited in claim 2, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated by filtering the boundary surface.

6. A method as recited in claim 2, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated from a selected portion of the boundary surface.

7. A method as recited in claim 2, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated after excluding some portions of the boundary surface.

8. A method as recited in claim 2, wherein the reference arm length is adjusted during the acquisition of the additional OCT data.

9. A method of displaying image data, said data obtained from imaging an eye using an imaging device, said eye having at least one boundary surface associated therewith, said method comprising:

identifying a boundary surface within the image data set;

generating a substantially smooth reference surface from the boundary surface;

identifying a second surface within the 3D image data set;

calculating the distance between points on the smooth reference surface and corresponding points on the second surface;

generating an image map of the calculated distances;

displaying the image map; and

simultaneously displaying an additional data set along with the image map.

10. A method as recited in claim 9, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated by fitting the boundary surface.

11. A method as recited in claim 9, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated by smoothing the boundary surface.

12. A method as recited in claim 9, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated by filtering the boundary surface.

13. A method as recited in claim 9, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated from a selected portion of the boundary surface.

14. A method as recited in claim 9, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated after excluding some portions of the boundary surface.

15. A method as recited in claim 9, wherein the additional data set is the thickness of a tissue layer.

16. A method as recited in claim 9, wherein the additional data set is the image signal strength.

17. A method as recited in claim 9, wherein the additional data set is birefringence data.

18. A method as recited in claim 9, wherein boundary surface is the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and the second surface is the inner limiting membrane (ILM) and the image map corresponds to the distance between a smoothed reference surface generated from the RPE and the ILM and the additional data is the distance between the RPE itself and the ILM.

19. A method of analyzing optical coherence tomography data of an eye, said eye having at least one boundary surface associated therewith, said method comprising;

acquiring an initial set of image data of the eye using an optical coherence tomography (OCT device, said OCT device including a light source, a beam splitter for dividing the light along a sample arm and a reference arm, said sample arm further including optical elements to scan the beam over the eye, said OCT device including a detector for receiving light returned from both the sample and the reference arms and generating signals corresponding to 3D image data based on an axial reflection distribution arising from reflecting features in the eye;

identifying a boundary surface within the 3D image data set;

generating a substantially smooth reference surface from the boundary surface;

analyzing the curvature of the smooth reference surface to provide information on the disease status of the eye.

20. A method as recited in claim 19, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated by fitting the boundary surface.

21. A method as recited in claim 19, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated by smoothing the boundary surface.

22. A method as recited in claim 19, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated by filtering the boundary surface.

23. A method as recited in claim 19, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated from a selected portion of the boundary surface.

24. A method as recited in claim 19, wherein the substantially smooth reference surface is generated after excluding some portions of the boundary surface.

25. A method as recited in claim 19, wherein the curvature of the smooth reference surface is analyzed to identify eyes with abnormal tissue layer curvature.

26. A method as recited in claim 19, wherein the boundary layer is the RPE.

27. A method as recited in claim 26 wherein the curvature of the smooth reference surface is used to determine if the retina has an abnormal curvature.
