Abstract

Systems and methods for a fluid reservoir for use with a fluid infusion device, which is automatically filled are provided. The fluid reservoir includes a barrel having a proximal end and a distal end. The fluid reservoir also includes a stopper received in the barrel and movable within the barrel from the distal end to the proximal end to dispense a fluid from a passageway of the barrel. The fluid reservoir includes at least one engagement feature defined along a portion of a perimeter of the barrel near the proximal end that removably couples the fluid reservoir to the fluid infusion device.

Claims

1. A fluid reservoir for use with a fluid infusion device, the fluid reservoir comprising:

a barrel having a proximal end and a distal end;

a stopper received in the barrel and movable within the barrel from the distal end to the proximal end to dispense a fluid from a passageway of the barrel; and

at least one engagement feature defined along a portion of a perimeter of the barrel near the proximal end that removably couples the fluid reservoir to the fluid infusion device.

2. The fluid reservoir of claim 1, wherein the at least one engagement feature is one or more threads defined along the portion of the perimeter of the barrel.

3. The fluid reservoir of claim 1, wherein the proximal end includes at least one grip surface to assist in coupling the fluid reservoir to the fluid infusion device.

4. The fluid reservoir of claim 3, wherein the at least one grip surface is at least one wing that extends outwardly from the proximal end of the barrel.

5. The fluid reservoir of claim 3, wherein the at least one grip surface is at least one post that extends outwardly from the proximal end of the barrel.

6. The fluid reservoir of claim 3, wherein the at least one grip surface is a mounting projection that extends outwardly from the proximal end of the barrel.

7. The fluid reservoir of claim 1, wherein the fluid reservoir further comprises at least one locking arm to cooperate with a portion of the fluid infusion device.

8. The fluid reservoir of claim 1, wherein the distal end includes at least one retaining device to retain the stopper within the barrel.

9. A fluid reservoir for use with a fluid infusion device, the fluid reservoir comprising:

a barrel having a proximal end and a distal end;

a stopper received in the barrel and movable within the barrel from the distal end to the proximal end to dispense a fluid from a passageway of the barrel; and

a mounting projection coupled to the proximal end of the barrel and defining at least a second passageway in fluid communication with the passageway of the barrel, with a portion of the mounting projection movable to obstruct the second passageway.

10. The fluid reservoir of claim 9, wherein the stopper includes at least one coupling device to couple the stopper to a portion of the fluid infusion device.

11. The fluid reservoir of claim 10, wherein the at least one coupling device is at least one locking arm.

12. The fluid reservoir of claim 10, wherein the at least one coupling device is at least one thread.

13. The fluid reservoir of claim 9, wherein the mounting projection defines a bore, and a housing is received in the bore, with the housing movable within the bore to obstruct the second passageway.

14. The fluid reservoir of claim 13, wherein the mounting projection defines a third passageway and the housing defines a fourth passageway and a fifth passageway, and the third passageway and the fourth passageway cooperate to define the second passageway.

15. The fluid reservoir of claim 14, wherein the fifth passageway is in fluid communication with the passageway of the barrel and the fourth passageway.

16. The fluid reservoir of claim 14, wherein the housing is movable between a first, closed position and a second, opened position, and in the first, closed position the second passageway is obstructed.

17. A fluid reservoir for use with a fluid infusion device, the fluid reservoir comprising:

a barrel having a proximal end and a distal end;

a stopper received in the barrel and movable within the barrel from the distal end to the proximal end to dispense a fluid from a passageway of the barrel; and

a mounting projection coupled to the proximal end of the barrel and defining a bore and a second passageway, with a housing received in the bore and defining a third passageway and a fourth passageway, the third passageway in fluid communication with the fourth passageway and the fourth passageway in fluid communication with the passageway of the barrel,

wherein the housing is movable within the bore between a first, closed position in which the second passageway is obstructed, and a second, open position in which the second passageway and third passageway are coaxially aligned to allow fluid to exit the barrel.

18. The fluid reservoir of claim 17, wherein the distal end includes at least one retaining device to retain the stopper within the barrel.

19. The fluid reservoir of claim 17, further comprising at least one engagement feature defined along a portion of a perimeter of the barrel near the proximal end that removably couples the fluid reservoir to the fluid infusion device.

20. The fluid reservoir of claim 19, wherein the at least one engagement feature is one or more threads defined along the portion of the perimeter of the barrel.
