Abstract

A system and method is provided for authorizing a payment for a point of sale transaction by authenticating the user of a mobile device, such as a mobile phone. The present invention authenticates the consumer and verifies that he is authorized to conduct a transaction at the point of sale by means of the consumer'"'"'s mobile device.

Claims

1. A method for providing multi-factor authentication for payment transactions using a mobile device, the method comprising:

receiving, from the mobile device, a text message for establishing a voice connection receiving a device identifier associated with the mobile device;

determining if the device identifier corresponds to a registered device identifier;

establishing the voice connection with the mobile device;

receiving through the voice connection a voice sample of a consumer associated with the mobile device;

comparing the voice sample with a registered voice sample associated with the mobile device;

converting the voice sample into a text sequence;

comparing at least a portion of the text sequence with a registered text sequence associated with the mobile device;

generating an authorization identifier in response to comparing the at least a portion of the text sequence, to be presented by the consumer at a point of transaction; and

transmitting the authorization identifier to the mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising initiating the voice connection with the mobile device upon determining that the device identifier corresponds to the registered device identifier.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the text message includes a point-of-sale identifier.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the text message includes verification information relating to the consumer.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising comparing the verification information to registered verification information associated with the mobile device.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the authorization identifier comprises one or more of alphanumeric data and barcode data.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the authorization identifier is valid for multiple payment transactions.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the voice sample comprises a point-of-sale identifier.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising associating the authorization identifier with a point-of-sale terminal associated with the point-of-sale identifier.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising requesting additional voice samples from the consumer through the voice connection in order to obtain additional verification information from the consumer.

11. A method for providing multi-factor authentication for payment transactions using a mobile device, the method comprising:

receiving, from the mobile device, a text message for establishing a voice connection receiving a device identifier associated with mobile device;

determining if the device identifier corresponds to a registered device identifier;

establishing the voice connection with the mobile device;

receiving through the voice connection a voice sample of a consumer associated with the mobile device;

comparing the voice sample with a registered voice sample associated with the mobile device;

generating an authorization identifier in response to comparing the voice sample, to be presented by the consumer at a point of transaction; and

transmitting the authorization identifier to the mobile device.
