1. A transcutaneous analyte sensor system comprising:

  • an electrode configured to measure a level of glucose in a host;

    a membrane disposed over the electrode and configured to limit transport of glucose to the electrode; and

    sensor electronics operably connected to the electrode and configured to measure a current flow produced by the electrode to generate sensor data, wherein the sensor electronics are configured to measure the current flow in at least a picoAmp range, wherein the sensor electronics are further configured to calibrate the sensor data based on reference data from a reference lucose monitor and further configured to guide or validate the calibration based on predetermined sensitivity information between about 5 pA/mg/dL and about 25 pA/mg/dL, wherein the predetermined sensitivity information is derived from in vivo testing of at least one other continuous glucose sensor or in vitro testing, and wherein the electrode comprises an exposed electroactive working electrode with a surface area between about 0.000084 cm2 and about 0.016 cm2.
