Abstract

In accordance with some embodiments, a computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a device with a touch screen display is disclosed. In the method, an electronic document is displayed at a first magnification. A gesture is detected on or near the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom out by a user-specified amount. In response to detecting the gesture, the electronic document is displayed at a magnification less than the first magnification. If a document length or a document width is entirely displayed while the gesture is still detected on or near the touch screen display, the electronic document is displayed at a magnification wherein areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are displayed. Upon detecting termination of the gesture, the electronic document is displayed at a magnification wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are no longer displayed.

Claims

1. A device, comprising:

a touch screen display;

one or more processors;

memory; and

one or more programs, wherein the one or more programs are stored in the memory and configured to be executed by the one or more processors, the one or more programs including instructions for;

displaying an electronic document at a first magnification on the touch screen display;

detecting a gesture on the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom out by a user-specified amount;

displaying the electronic document at a magnification less than the first magnification on the touch screen display, in response to detecting the gesture;

displaying the electronic document at a magnification wherein areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are displayed on the touch screen display, if a document length or a document width is entirely displayed while the gesture is still detected on the touch screen display; and

in response to detecting termination of the gesture, displaying the electronic document at a magnification wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are no longer displayed on the touch screen display.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the gesture comprises a pinching gesture.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is a portable multifunction device.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the electronic document is a web page.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document and an area beyond a bottom edge of the document.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a right edge of the document and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document, an area beyond a bottom edge of the document, an area beyond a right edge of the document, and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are visually distinct from the document.

9. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

at a device with a touch screen display;

displaying an electronic document at a first magnification on the touch screen display;

detecting a gesture on the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom out by a user-specified amount;

displaying the electronic document at a magnification less than the first magnification on the touch screen display, in response to detecting the gesture;

displaying the electronic document at a magnification wherein areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are displayed on the touch screen display, if a document length or a document width is entirely displayed while the gesture is still detected on the touch screen display; and

in response to detecting termination of the gesture, displaying the electronic document at a magnification wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are no longer displayed on the touch screen display.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 9, wherein the gesture comprises a pinching gesture.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 9, wherein the device is a portable multifunction device.

12. The computer-implemented method of claim 9, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document and an area beyond a bottom edge of the document.

13. The computer-implemented method of claim 9, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a right edge of the document and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

14. The computer-implemented method of claim 9, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document, an area beyond a bottom edge of the document, an area beyond a right edge of the document, and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

27. The computer-implemented method of claim 9, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are visually distinct from the document.

15. A graphical user interface on a device with a touch screen display, comprising:

an electronic document having a document length and a document width, to be displayed on the touch screen display at multiple magnifications including a first magnification; and

areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document;

wherein;

in response to detecting a gesture on the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom out by a user-specified amount, wherein the gesture is detected while displaying the electronic document at the first magnification, the electronic document is displayed at a magnification less than the first magnification on the touch screen display;

if the document length or document width is entirely displayed while the gesture is still detected on the touch screen display, the electronic document is displayed at a magnification wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are displayed on the touch screen display; and

in response to detecting termination of the gesture, the electronic document is displayed at a magnification wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are no longer displayed on the touch screen display.

16. The graphical user interface of claim 15, wherein the gesture comprises a pinching gesture.

17. The graphical user interface of claim 15, wherein the device is a portable multifunction device.

18. The graphical user interface of claim 15, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document and an area beyond a bottom edge of the document.

19. The graphical user interface of claim 15, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a right edge of the document and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

20. The graphical user interface of claim 15, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document, an area beyond a bottom edge of the document, an area beyond a right edge of the document, and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

28. The graphical user interface of claim 15, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are visually distinct from the document.

21. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having stored therein instructions, which when executed by a device with a touch screen display, cause the device to:

display an electronic document at a first magnification on the touch screen display;

detect a gesture on the touch screen display corresponding to a command to zoom out by a user-specified amount;

display the electronic document at a magnification less than the first magnification on the touch screen display, in response to detecting the gesture;

display the electronic document at a magnification wherein areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are displayed on the touch screen display, if a document length or a document width is entirely displayed while the gesture is still detected on the touch screen display; and

in response to detecting termination of the gesture, display the electronic document at a magnification wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are no longer displayed on the touch screen display.

22. The computer readable storage medium of claim 21, wherein the gesture comprises a pinching gesture.

23. The computer readable storage medium of claim 21, wherein the device is a portable multifunction device.

24. The computer readable storage medium of claim 21, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document and an area beyond a bottom edge of the document.

25. The computer readable storage medium of claim 21, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a right edge of the document and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

26. The computer readable storage medium of claim 21, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document include an area beyond a top edge of the document, an area beyond a bottom edge of the document, an area beyond a right edge of the document, and an area beyond a left edge of the document.

29. The computer readable storage medium of claim 21, wherein the areas beyond opposite edges of the electronic document are visually distinct from the document.
