Abstract

An implantable device, such as a pacer, defibrillator, or other cardiac rhythm management device, can include one or more MRI Safe components. In an example, the implantable device includes a battery including a first electrode and a second electrode separate from the first electrode. The second electrode includes a first surface and a second surface. The second electrode includes a slot through the second electrode from the first surface toward the second surface. The slot extends from a perimeter of the second electrode to an interior of the second electrode. The slot is configured to at least partially segment a surface area of the second electrode to reduce a radial current loop size in the second electrode.

Claims

1. An implantable medical device battery comprising:

a first electrode; and

a second electrode separate from the first electrode, the second electrode including;

a first layer formed of a first material and having a first surface and a second

surface, the first layer including a first section and a second section

having a greater resistance than the first section and extending from the first surface

toward the second surface, the second section extending from a perimeter of the second electrode to an interior of the second electrode, the second section including at least one slot extending through the first layer, wherein the second section is configured to at least partially segment a surface area of the second electrode to reduce a radial current loop size in the second electrode; and

a second layer formed of a second material different from the first material and having a third surface and a forth surface, the third surface abutting the second surface of the first layer, the second layer including at least one tab extending from the third surface of the second layer and positioned within the at least one slot of the first layer, the at least one tab formed from a third material different from the first material;

wherein the second material includes a conductive material and the third material includes a polymeric material.

2. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the first electrode

includes a cathode and the second electrode includes an anode.

3. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the second electrode is substantially planar.

4. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein

the first layer includes lithium.

5. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein

the second layer includes a conductive material.

6. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the

second layer includes stainless steel.

7. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein

the second layer includes nickel.

8. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the second section includes a slot extending through the first and second layers.

9. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the second electrode includes a third layer abutting the fourth surface of the second layer, the second layer being disposed between the first and third layers.

10. The implantable medical device battery of claim 9, wherein the second electrode includes another slot extending through the third layer.

11. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the second section includes more than one slot extending through the first layer.

12. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the third material including an insulating material is configured to maintain separation of the second electrode along a length of the at least one slot.

13. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the first electrode includes a second section extending from a perimeter of the first electrode to an interior of the first electrode, wherein the second section is configured to at least partially segment a surface area of the first electrode to reduce a radial current loop size in the first electrode.

21. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the third material is different from the second material.

22. The implantable medical device battery of claim 1, wherein the third material is the same as the second material.

14. A method of making an implantable medical device battery comprising:

stacking a first electrode with a second electrode, wherein the second electrode is

separate from the first electrode, the second electrode including;

a first layer formed of a first material and having a first surface and a second surface, the first layer including a first section and a second section having a greater resistance section than the first section and extending from the first surface toward the second surface, the second section extending from a perimeter of the second electrode to an interior of the second electrode, the second section including at least one slot extending through the first layer, wherein the second section is configured to at least partially segment a surface area of the second electrode to reduce a radial current loop size in the second electrode; and

a second layer formed of a second material different from the first material and having a third surface and a fourth surface, the third surface abutting the second surface of the first layer, the second layer including at least one tab extending from the third at least one tab formed from a third material different from the first material;

wherein the second material includes a conductive material and the third material includes a polymeric material.

15. The method of claim 14, comprising segmenting the second electrode to form the second section including a slot.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein segmenting includes die pressing the first layer to form the second section.

17. The method of claim 16, comprising inserting the at least one tab within the at least one slot of the first layer.

18. The method of claim 14, comprising segmenting the second electrode to form the second section, wherein segmenting includes pressing the first layer together with the second layer.

19. The method of claim 14, comprising segmenting the first electrode to form a second section extending from a perimeter of the first electrode to an interior of the first electrode, wherein the second section is configured to at least partially segment a surface area of the first electrode to reduce a radial current loop size in the first electrode.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein segmenting includes die pressing the first electrode to form the second section, the high resistance section including a slot.
