Surgical stapler anvil comprising a plurality of forming pockets
First Claim
1. A surgical instrument, comprising:
- a shaft; and
an end effector extending distally from said shaft, said end effector comprising;
a staple cartridge, comprising;
a cartridge body;
a first staple row deployable from said cartridge body from an unfired configuration to a fired configuration, wherein said first staple row comprises a plurality of staples comprising each a staple leg; and
a second staple row deployable from said cartridge body from an unfired configuration to a fired configuration, wherein said second staple row comprises a plurality of staples comprising each a staple leg; and
an anvil, wherein at least one of said staple cartridge and said anvil is rotatably movable relative to the other of said staple cartridge and said anvil, and wherein said anvil comprises;
a first row of primary staple pockets, wherein said first row of primary staple pockets is registered with and configured to receive said staple legs of said first staple row when said staples of said first staple row are transitioned from said unfired configuration to said fired configuration;
a second row of primary staple pockets, wherein said second row of primary staple pockets is registered with and configured to receive said staple legs of said second staple row when said staples of said second staple row are transitioned from said unfired configuration to said fired configuration, wherein said second row of primary staple pockets are laterally offset with respect to said first row of primary staple pockets; and
a third row of secondary staple pockets adjacent said first row and said second row, wherein said secondary staple pockets are intended to receive said staple legs when said staple legs are not received by said first or second row of primary staple pockets when said staples are transitioned from said unfired configuration to said fired configuration, wherein said secondary staple pockets of said third row are not registered with any of said staple legs, and wherein said secondary staple pockets are nested between, offset longitudinally, and offset laterally with respect to said first row of primary staple pockets and said second row of primary staple pockets.

Abstract
A fastener cartridge can comprise a support portion, a tissue thickness compensator positioned relative to the support portion, and a plurality of fasteners positioned within the support portion and/or the tissue thickness compensator which can be utilized to fasten tissue. In use, the fastener cartridge can be positioned in a first jaw of a surgical fastening device, wherein a second jaw, or anvil, can be positioned opposite the first jaw. To deploy the fasteners, a staple-deploying member is advanced through the fastener cartridge to move the fasteners toward the anvil. As the fasteners are deployed, the fasteners can capture at least a portion of the tissue thickness compensator therein along with at least a portion of the tissue being fastened.
