Surgical stapling apparatuses with lockable end effector positioning systems
First Claim
1. A surgical instrument, comprising:
- a housing;
an elongate shaft configured for operable attachment to a surgical end effector; and
a selectively lockable rotation system comprising;
a mounting member coupled to said elongate shaft and being rotatably supported on said housing for selective rotation relative to said housing about a longitudinal axis defined by said elongate shaft; and
a switch member supported for selective longitudinal movement relative to said housing and said mounting member between an unlocked position wherein said mounting member is freely rotatable relative to said housing and a locked position wherein a locking formation on a distal end of said switch member is in retaining engagement with said mounting member to prevent said mounting member and said elongate shaft from rotating relative to said housing.

Abstract
A surgical instrument that comprises a housing, an elongate shaft configured for operable attachment to a surgical end effector, and a selectively lockable rotation system is disclosed. The selectively lockable rotation system comprises a mounting member coupled to the elongate shaft and being rotatably supported on the housing for selective rotation relative to the housing about a longitudinal axis defined by the elongate shaft. The selectively lockable rotation system further comprises a switch member supported for selective longitudinal movement relative to the housing and the mounting member between an unlocked position wherein the mounting member is freely rotatable relative to the housing and a locked position wherein a locking formation on a distal end of the switch member is in retaining engagement with the mounting member to prevent the mounting member and the elongate shaft from rotating relative to the housing.

11. A surgical instrument, comprising:
-
a housing; an elongate shaft; rotation means for coupling said elongate shaft to said housing and facilitating selective rotation of said elongate shaft relative to said housing about a longitudinal axis defined by said elongate shaft; a surgical end effector operably coupled to said elongate shaft by an articulation joint to facilitate selective articulation of said surgical end effector relative to said elongate shaft in directions transverse to said longitudinal axis; articulation means for selectively applying articulation motions to said surgical end effector; and locking means interfacing with said rotation means and said articulation means such that when said rotation means is actuated, said locking means prevents said articulation means from applying said articulation motions to said surgical end effector and when said articulation means is actuated, said locking means prevents said rotation means from rotating said elongate shaft. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18)

19. A surgical instrument, comprising:
-
a handle; an elongate shaft comprising an articulation joint; a surgical end effector operably coupled to said articulation joint; an articulation system comprising; an articulation link configured to operably interface with said surgical end effector to apply articulation motions thereto; and an articulation actuator supported for movable travel on said handle and interfacing with said articulation link to selectively apply actuation motions to said articulation link and wherein said surgical instrument further comprises a selectively lockable rotation system comprising; a mounting member coupled to said elongate shaft and being rotatably supported on said handle for selective rotation relative to said handle about a longitudinal axis defined by said elongate shaft; and a switch member supported for selective longitudinal movement relative to said handle and said mounting member between an unlocked position wherein said mounting member is freely rotatable relative to said handle and a locked position wherein a locking formation on a distal end of said switch member is in retaining engagement with said mounting member to prevent said mounting member from rotating relative to said handle. - View Dependent Claims (20, 21, 22, 23)
