Abstract

A system and method for providing multiple units of measurement for administering medication in a patient care system. The system and method coordinate the use of the plurality of medication units of measure throughout the patient care system. The system may be implemented as a computer program including logic for: displaying a plurality of medication units of measure that are commonly used by subsystems of the patient care system and logic for equating the plurality of medication units of measure.

Claims

1. A patient care system for administering a medication, the system comprising:

a medication order entry interface, the medication order entry interface designed to display a first medication unit of measure, the first medication unit of measure being a unit of measure commonly used by physicians while prescribing the medication within the system;

a pharmacy interface, the pharmacy interface designed to display a second medication unit of measure, the second medication unit of measure being a unit of measure commonly used by pharmacists while filling prescriptions for the medication within the system;

an administration interface, the administration interface designed to display a third medication unit of measure, the third medication unit of measure being a unit of measure commonly used by clinicians during administration of the medication to a patient at a treatment location within the system;

a billing interface, the billing interface designed to provide a fourth medication unit of measure, the fourth medication unit of measure being a unit of measure commonly used to calculate financial figures that appear on medication invoices; and

a computer designed to equate the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure.

2. The patient care system of claim 1, further comprising:

a screening interface, the screening interface designed to provide a fifth medication unit of measure, the fifth medication unit of measure being compatible with a medication screening program, where the computer is designed to equate the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth medication units of measure.

3. The patient care system of claim 1, further comprising:

a displayed check box table, the check box table being designed to correlate the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure, the check box table including a plurality of units of measure, the check box table including an identifier for a physician, a pharmacist, and an administering clinician.

4. The patient care system of claim 1, where the computer includes defaults for a plurality of medications, the defaults including the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure for the plurality of medications.

5. The patient care system of claim 1, where the computer includes multipliers to equate the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure.

6. The patient care system of claim 1, where the computer includes dividers to equate the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure.

7. The patient care system of claim 1, where the medication units of measurement may be individualized by the end user, for the interface accessed by the end user.

8. A method for administering a medication in a patient care system, the method comprising the steps of:

displaying a first medication unit of measure during medication order entry, the first medication unit of measure being a unit of measure commonly used by physicians while prescribing the medication within the system;

displaying a second medication unit of measure while filling prescriptions for the medication, the second unit of measure being a unit of measure commonly used by pharmacists while filling prescriptions for the medication within the system

displaying a third medication unit of measure while administering the medication, the third unit of measure being a unit of measure commonly used by clinicians during administration of the medication to a patient at a treatment location within the system;

providing a fourth medication unit of measure for financial personnel, the, the fourth unit of measure commonly used to calculate financial figures that appear on medication invoices; and

designing a computer to equate the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising the step of:

providing a fifth medication unit of measure the fifth medication unit of measure being compatible with a medication screening program, where the computer is designed to equate the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth medication units of measure.

10. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

displaying a check box table, the check box table being designed to correlate the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure, the check box table including a plurality of units of measure, the check box table including an identifier for a physician, a pharmacist, and an administering clinician.

11. The method of claim 8, where the computer includes defaults for a plurality of medications, the defaults including the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure for the plurality of medications.

12. The method of claim 8, where the computer includes multipliers to equate the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure.

13. The method of claim 8, where the computer includes dividers to equate the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure.

14. The method of claim 8, where the medication units of measurement may be individualized by the end user, for the interface accessed by the end user.

15. A computer readable medium for administering a medication in a patient care system, the medium comprising:

logic for displaying a first medication unit of measure during medication order entry, the first medication unit of measure being a unit of measure commonly used by physicians while prescribing the medication within the system;

logic for displaying a second medication unit of measure while filling prescriptions for the medication, the second unit of measure being a unit of measure commonly used by pharmacists while filling prescriptions for the medication within the system

logic for displaying a third medication unit of measure while administering the medication, the third unit of measure being a unit of measure commonly used by clinicians during administration of the medication to a patient at a treatment location within the system;

logic for providing a fourth medication unit of measure for financial personnel, the, the fourth unit of measure commonly used to calculate financial figures that appear on medication invoices; and

logic for equating the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 15, further comprising:

logic for providing a fifth medication unit of measure, the fifth medication unit of measure being compatible with a medication screening program, where the logic for equating includes logic for equating the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth medication units of measure.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 15, further comprising:

logic for displaying a check box table, the check box table being designed to correlate the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure, the check box table including a plurality of units of measure, the check box table including an identifier for a physician, a pharmacist, and an administering clinician.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 15, where the logic for equating includes logic for accessing defaults for a plurality of medications, the defaults including the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure for the plurality of medications.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 15, where the logic for equating includes accessing multipliers to equate the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 15, where the logic for equating includes accessing dividers to equate the first, second, third, and fourth medication units of measure.

21. The computer readable medium of claim 15, where the medication units of measurement may be individualized by the end user, for the interface accessed by the end user.
