1. An ultrasonic medical device for treating tissue comprising:

  • an ultrasonic probe having a proximal end, a distal end and a longitudinal axis between the proximal end and the distal end; and

    a diameter of the ultrasonic probe that is tapered from the proximal end of the ultrasonic probe to the distal end of the ultrasonic probe, wherein the ultrasonic probe operates in a transverse mode of vibration with a transverse ultrasonic vibration along at least a portion of the longitudinal axis of the ultrasonic probe that produces a plurality of transverse vibration anti-nodes along at least a portion of the longitudinal axis of the ultrasonic probe.
