1. A machine-implemented adaptive rezoning process for implementation in a finite element (FE) analysis process for analyzing a continuum having a boundary, including the steps of (a) defining geometric and material parameters, (b) discretizing the continuum, (c) defining the element properties and geometry, (d) defining an initial mesh of nodes coupled by the elements, (e) applying boundary conditions and material parameters to the initial mesh, and (f) solving a system of simultaneous equations to find the strain displacements of a plurality of the mesh nodes as a function of a time increment, the adaptive rezoning process comprising the steps of:

  • (g) generating a plurality of eigenvalues responsive to a machine-implemented solution of a plurality of element eigenvalue equations;

    (h) generating an element distortion measure at a first mesh node responsive to the plurality of eigenvalues;

    (j) defining a new mesh over at least one region in the continuum responsive to the first mesh node distortion measure;

    (k) generating a discontinuity measure for the new mesh;

    (l) repeating the defining step (j) and the generating step (k) if the discontinuity measure exceeds a second predetermined threshold; and

    (m) mapping the initial mesh to the new mesh.
