Abstract

A deep brain stimulation (DBS) system (10) provides a multiplicity of stimulation channels through which electrical stimuli may be delivered deep within the brain of a patient. The DBS system is powered by a rechargeable battery (27). In one embodiment, the system has four channels driving sixteen electrodes (32). The DBS system is easily programmed for use by a clinician using a clinician programming system (60), and further affords a simple but highly advanced hand held programmer (50) control interface through which the patient may easily change stimulation parameters within acceptable limits. The DBS system (10) includes a small, implantable pulse generator (20) that is small enough to be implanted directly in the cranium of the patient, thereby eliminating the long lead wires and tunneling procedures that have been used in the past. The implantable pulse generator provides electrical stimuli in an open-loop fashion as defined by the stimulation parameters. Further, the DBS system allows up to two electrode arrays (30, 30′) to be attached to the implantable pulse generator (20), thereby eliminating the requirement for implanting two independent implantable pulse generators for bilateral stimulation of deep brain structures.

Claims

1. A multichannel deep brain stimulation system comprising:

an implantable pulse generator comprising means for generating electrical stimuli, a plurality of channels and memory circuits, wherein the memory circuits are adapted to store at least one program and data;

at least one electrode array connected to said implantable pulse generator, said at least one electrode array having a plurality of electrodes;

a rechargeable battery coupled to the implantable pulse generator;

a hand-held programmer; and

an external battery charging system;

wherein the implantable pulse generator and said at least one electrode array are adapted to be implanted directly in the cranium of a patient; and

wherein the means for generating electrical stimuli comprises control circuits responsive to the at least one program and data stored in the memory circuits that cause electrical stimuli defined by the at least one program and data to be applied open loop through at least one of the plurality of channels to the electrodes of the at least one electrode array; and

wherein the hand-held programmer is adapted to communicate with the implantable pulse generator for the purpose of programming and testing the implantable pulse generator; and

wherein the external battery charging system is adapted to be inductively coupled to the rechargeable battery for the purpose of replenishing power stored within the rechargeable battery.

2. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 1 further including a manufacturing and diagnostic system, the manufacturing and diagnostic system including means for coupling with the implantable pulse generator via radio frequency (RF) communication.

3. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 2 wherein the manufacturing and diagnostic system further includes means for coupling with the hand-held programmer via infrared communication.

4. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 1 wherein said at least one electrode array comprises at least two electrode arrays (30, 30′

), thereby facilitating bilateral stimulation of the brain of the patient.

5. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 4 wherein each of the electrode arrays (30 and 30′

) includes at least two and as many as sixteen electrodes (32, 32′

).

6. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 1 further including a clinician programmer, and wherein the clinician programmer may be coupled to the hand-held programmer via infrared or RF communication for the purpose of coupling the clinician programmer with the implantable pulse generator.

7. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 1 wherein the implantable pulse generator comprises a header connector, and wherein the at least one electrode array is detachably connected to the implantable pulse generator through the header connector.

8. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 7 wherein the implantable pulse generator comprises an output circuit, and wherein the at least one electrode array is capacitively coupled to the output circuit of the implantable pulse generator.

The deep brain stimulation system of claim 1 wherein the implantable pulse generator comprises a header connector and wherein each of said plurality of electrode arrays is detachably connected to the implantable pulse generator through at least one lead that interfaces with the header connector.

16. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 15 wherein the implantable pulse generator comprises an output circuit and wherein the at least one electrode array is capacitively coupled to the output circuit of the implantable pulse generator.

9. A multichannel bilateral deep brain stimulation system comprising:

an implantable pulse generator;

a hand-held programmer;

a plurality of electrode arrays detachably connected to the implantable pulse generator via at least one lead, each of said plurality of electrode arrays having a plurality of electrodes thereon;

processing means and memory means included within the implantable pulse generator, wherein the memory means stores at least one stimulation program and data, and wherein the implantable pulse generator is adapted to generate and apply stimulation pulses in an open loop manner to selected electrodes of the plurality of electrode arrays as defined by the at least one stimulation program and data stored within the memory means;

a rechargeable battery included within the implantable pulse generator that provides operating power for the implantable pulse generator;

means for non-invasively programming the memory means with the desired at least one stimulation program and data; and

means for non-invasively recharging the rechargeable battery.

10. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 9 further including a manufacturing and diagnostic system, the manufacturing and diagnostic system including means for coupling with the implantable pulse generator via a wireless communication link.

11. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 10 wherein the manufacturing and diagnostic system further includes means for coupling with the hand-held programmer via a second wireless communication link.

12. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 9 wherein each of the plurality of electrode arrays includes at least two and as many as sixteen electrodes.

13. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 9 further including a clinician programmer.

14. The deep brain stimulation system of claim 13 wherein the clinician programmer may be coupled to the hand-held programmer via an infrared communication link, whereby the clinician programmer may be coupled with the implantable pulse generator through the hand-held programmer.

17. A multichannel deep brain stimulation system comprising:

a cranium mountable implantable pulse generator including at least one memory circuit;

data stored within the at least one memory circuit;

at least one electrode array adapted to be detachably connected to the implantable pulse generator, the at least one electrode array including two or more electrodes thereon;

a rechargeable battery coupled to the implantable pulse generator;

an external battery charging system;

wherein the implantable pulse generator is adapted to generate electrical pulses that are defined solely by parameters specified by the data stored in the at least one memory circuit.

18. The system of claim 17 further comprising a programmer adapted to communicate with the implantable pulse generator.

19. The system of claim 17 wherein:

the implantable pulse generator includes at least two channels,

the two or more electrodes of the at least one electrode array are adapted to be assigned to any of the at least two channels, and

each of the at least two channels includes means for defining a common frequency and pulse duration for the two or more electrodes when such electrodes are assigned to an associated channel.

20. The system of claim 17 including means for non-invasively programming the at least one memory circuit.
