Abstract

An external device, charge, system and method for an implantable medical device having therapeutic componentry, a secondary coil operatively coupled to the therapeutic componentry and an internal telemetry coil. A primary coil is capable of inductively energizing the secondary coil when externally placed in proximity of the secondary coil. An external telemetry coil is capable of communicating with the internal telemetry coil. Driver circuitry is selectively operatively coupled to the primary coil and to the external telemetry coil. The driver circuitry is switchable between (1) driving the primary coil for inductively energizing the secondary coil and (2) driving the external telemetry coil for communicating with the internal telemetry coil.

Claims

1. An external device for an implantable medical device having therapeutic componentry, a secondary coil operatively coupled to said therapeutic componentry and an internal telemetry coil, comprising:

a primary coil capable of inductively energizing said secondary coil when externally placed in proximity of said secondary coil;

an external telemetry coil capable of communicating with said internal telemetry coil; and

driver circuitry selectively operatively coupled to said primary coil and to said external telemetry coil;

said driver circuitry being switchable between (1) driving said primary coil for inductively energizing said secondary coil and (2) driving said external telemetry coil for communicating with said internal telemetry coil.

An external power source as in claim 1 wherein said driver circuitry operates (1) at a relatively low frequency when switched for driving said primary coil for inductively energizing said secondary coil and (2) at a relatively high frequency when switched for driving said external telemetry coil for communicating with said internal telemetry coil.

3. An external power source as in claim 1 wherein said implantable medical device has a rechargeable power source operatively coupled to said therapeutic componentry and wherein said secondary coil charges said rechargeable power source when driven by said primary coil.

9. A system as in claim 1 wherein said implantable medical device has a rechargeable power source operatively coupled to said therapeutic componentry and wherein said secondary coil charges said rechargeable power source when driven by said primary coil.

4. A charger for an implantable medical device having a rechargeable power source, therapeutic componentry operatively coupled to said rechargeable power source, a secondary coil operatively coupled to said therapeutic componentry and an internal telemetry coil, comprising:

a primary coil capable of inductively energizing said secondary coil for charging said implantable medical device when externally placed in proximity of said secondary coil;

an external telemetry coil capable of communicating with said internal telemetry coil; and

driver circuitry selectively operatively coupled to said primary coil and to said external telemetry coil;

said driver circuitry being switchable between (1) driving said primary coil for inductively energizing said secondary coil and (2) driving said external telemetry coil for communicating with said internal telemetry coil.

A charger as in claim 4 wherein said driver circuitry operates (1) at a relatively low frequency when switched for driving said primary coil for inductively energizing said secondary coil and (2) at a relatively high frequency when switched for driving said external telemetry coil for communicating with said internal telemetry coil.

6. A charger as in claim 4 wherein said secondary coil charges said rechargeable power source when driven by said primary coil.

7. A system for transcutaneous energy transfer, comprising:

an implantable medical device, comprising;

therapeutic componentry for producing a therapeutic output;

a secondary coil operatively coupled to therapeutic componentry; and

an internal telemetry coil operatively coupled to said therapeutic componentry; and

an external power source, comprising;

a primary coil capable of inductively energizing said secondary coil when externally placed in proximity of said secondary coil;

an external telemetry coil capable of communicating with said internal telemetry coil; and

driver circuitry selectively operatively coupled to said primary coil and to said external telemetry coil;

said driver circuitry being switchable between (1) driving said primary coil for inductively energizing said secondary coil and (2) driving said external telemetry coil for communicating with said internal telemetry coil.

A system as in claim 7 wherein said driver circuitry operates (1) at a relatively low frequency when switched for driving said primary coil for inductively energizing said secondary coil and (2) at a relatively high frequency when switched for driving said external telemetry coil for communicating with said internal telemetry coil.

10. A method of transcutaneous energy transfer to a medical device implanted in a patient having therapeutic componentry, a secondary coil operatively coupled to said therapeutic componentry and an internal telemetry coil, comprising the steps of:

positioning a primary coil externally of said patient in proximity of said secondary coil;

inductively energizing said secondary coil with said primary coil via driver circuitry;

positioning an external telemetry coil external of said patient in proximity of said internal telemetry coil;

communicating between said external telemetry coil and said internal telemetry coil via said driver circuitry; and

switching said driver circuitry between (1) driving said primary coil for inductively energizing said secondary coil and (2) driving said external telemetry coil for communicating with said internal telemetry coil.

11. A method as in claim 10 wherein said driver circuitry drives (1) said primary coil at a relatively low frequency and (2) drives said external telemetry coil at a relatively high frequency.

12. A method as in claim 10 wherein said implantable medical device has a rechargeable power source operatively coupled to said therapeutic componentry and wherein said secondary coil charges said rechargeable power source when driven by said primary coil.
