Abstract

Methods and devices to urge two gastrointestinal organs toward one another by penetrating through a first wall of a first gastrointestinal organ with an elongate structure comprising at least two expandable elements slideable along the elongate structure, penetrating through a second gastrointestinal organ with the elongate structure, expanding a first expandable element of the elongate structure adjacent a first wall of the first gastrointestinal organ, expanding a second expandable element adjacent a second wall of the second gastrointestinal organ, urging the first and second gastrointestinal organs together, optionally applying an adhesive material to the region between the two gastrointestinal organs.

Claims

1. A method for approximating body lumens comprising:

Penetrating through a first wall of a first gastrointestinal organ with an elongate structure comprising at least two expandable elements slideable along the elongate structure;

Penetrating through a second gastrointestinal organ with the elongate structure;

Expanding a first expandable element of the elongate structure adjacent a first wall of the first gastrointestinal organ;

Expanding a second expandable element of the elongate structure adjacent a second wall of the second gastrointestinal organ;

Urging the first and second gastrointestinal organs together.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

Positioning a material between said first and said second gastrointestinal organs.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

Creating pressure between said first expandable element and said second expandable element.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

Applying energy to the region between said first and said second gastrointestinal organs.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said elongate structure is flexible.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said elongate structure comprises a lumen therethrough.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein said elongate structure comprises two lumens therethorugh.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein said elongate structure comprises at least three lumens therethrough.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein said elongate structure further comprises an element slideable along said elongate structure.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein at least one expandable element is expandable independently of the other expandable element.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

locking at least one expandable element on said elongate structure when the expandable elements are in an urged position.

12. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

measuring tension along the elongate structure while locking the expandable elements in an urged position.

13. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

placing an adhesive material between said first and said second gastrointestinal organs.

14. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

applying a light absorbing material between said first and said second gastrointestinal organs.

15. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

applying a coherent light source to the region between the first and second gastrointestinal organs.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

applying a non-coherent light source to the region between the first and second gastrointestinal organs.

17. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

applying an LED based light source to the region between the first and second gastrointestinal organs.

18. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

expanding at least one expandable element with a fluid.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein the connector and/or expandable elements comprises a magnetic material.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein the connector and/or the expandable elements comprises a shape memory material.
