Abstract

Improved assemblies, systems, and methods provide a stimulation system for prosthetic or therapeutic stimulation of muscles, nerves, or central nervous system tissue, or any combination. The stimulation system includes both implantable components and external components. The implantable components comprise a pulse generator including an operating system, a predefined set of stimulation parameters, a rechargeable battery, a power receiving coil, and a lead coupled to an electrode to provide electrical stimulation. An external clinical programmer system comprises a clinical programmer adapted for radio frequency wireless telemetry communication with the pulse generator, and a docking station, the docking station including a cradle to dock the hand held clinical programmer, the cradle adapted to provide access to a printer and/or non-volatile memory. An external patient controller system comprises a hand held implant charger controller adapted for radio frequency wireless telemetry communication with the pulse generator, the implant charger controller including a charging coil.

Claims

1. A pulse generator adapted to be coupled to an electrode to provide electrical stimulation comprising

a housing sized and configured for implantation in subcutaneous tissue,

circuitry and hardware carried entirely within the housing operable for generating and controlling electrical stimulation pulses,

the circuitry including operating system software to control the sequencing and operation of the implantable pulse generator, wherein the operating system software includes at least a system software module and at least an application software module, the system software module including an interface to the application software module, and

the application software interfacing to the system software module by using calls through the interface software.

2. The pulse generator according to claim 1

wherein the circuitry and hardware are adapted for radio frequency wireless telemetry, and the system software manages the timing of the radio frequency wireless telemetry and the encoding and decoding of the radio frequency wireless telemetry.

3. The pulse generator according to claim 1

wherein the system software is responsible for monitoring and controlling the circuitry and hardware of the implantable pulse generator.

4. The pulse generator according to claim 1

wherein the application software is responsible for establishing stimulation parameters for the stimulation waveform.

5. The pulse generator according to claim 1

wherein the circuitry and hardware further include a single current sink or source shared for up to four electrical stimulation channels.

6. An implantable pulse generator system comprising

implantable components and external components,

wherein the implantable components comprise a pulse generator sized and configured for implantation in subcutaneous tissue, the pulse generator including a predefined set of stimulation parameters, a rechargeable battery, a power receiving coil, and a lead coupled to an electrode to provide electrical stimulation, the lead adapted to be coupled to the pulse generator,

wherein the external components comprise a clinical programmer system and a patient controller system,

wherein the clinical programmer system comprises a clinical programmer adapted for radio frequency wireless telemetry communication with the pulse generator, and a docking station, the docking station including a cradle to dock the hand held clinical programmer, the cradle adapted to provide access to a printer and/or non-volatile memory, and

wherein the patient controller system comprises a hand held implant charger controller adapted for radio frequency wireless telemetry communication with the pulse generator, the implant charger controller including a charging coil.

7. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 6

wherein the patient controller system further comprises a patient controller adapted for radio frequency wireless telemetry communication with the pulse generator.

8. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 6

wherein the clinical programmer is adapted to configure and monitor all of the predefined set of stimulation parameters of the pulse generator.

9. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 6

wherein the printer and/or non-volatile memory are components of the docking station.

10. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 6

wherein the charging coil is releasably coupled to the implant charger controller.

11. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 6

wherein the implant charger controller is adapted to configure and monitor patient adjustable stimulation parameters of the pulse generator, the patient adjustable stimulation parameters comprising a subset of the predefined set of stimulation parameters.

12. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 6

wherein the patient controller system is adapted to configure and monitor patient adjustable stimulation parameters of the pulse generator, the patient adjustable stimulation parameters comprising a subset of the predefined set of stimulation parameters.

13. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 6

the pulse generator further comprising a housing sized and configured for implantation in subcutaneous tissue, the housing having a thickness of between about 5 mm and 15 mm, a width of between about 30 mm and 60 mm, and a length of between about 45 mm and 60 mm.

14. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 6

wherein the pulse generator is adapted to be implanted in subcutaneous tissue at an implant depth of between about five millimeters and about twenty millimeters.

15. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 6

the clinical programmer further including a rechargeable battery.

16. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 15

wherein the docking station is adapted to recharge the clinical programmer'"'"'s rechargeable battery when the clinical programmer is docked in the cradle.

17. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 15

wherein a power adapter is adapted to recharge the clinical programmer'"'"'s rechargeable battery when the power adapter is coupled to the clinical programmer and a power main.

18. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 6

further including instructions for use, the instructions for use instructing a patient to configure and monitor patient adjustable stimulation parameters of the pulse generator using the implant charger controller.

19. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 18

the instructions for use also including instructing a patient to configure and monitor patient adjustable stimulation parameters of the pulse generator using the patient controller system.

20. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 6

the implant charger controller further including a rechargeable battery.

21. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 20

wherein a power adapter is adapted to recharge the implant charger controller'"'"'s rechargeable battery when the power adapter is coupled to the implant charger controller and a power main.

22. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 6

wherein the pulse generator is adapted to apply electrical stimulation pulses to the electrode to treat a selected physiologic condition.

23. The implantable pulse generator system according to claim 22

wherein the physiologic condition is selected from the group consisting of urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, micturition/retention, defecation/constipation, restoration of sexual function, pelvic floor muscle activity, pelvic pain, obstructive sleep apnea, deep brain stimulation, pain management, heart conditions, gastric function, and restoration of motor control.
