Abstract

An optical fiber network may be provided in a building or set of buildings that can be used with any type of services, regardless of whether those services are provided as electrical signals or as optical signals. To accomplish this, a service aggregation gateway may be provided that receives electrical and/or optical service signals and converts the incoming electrical signals to optical signals. Also, a way for conventional electronic devices in the building to communicate with the optical fiber network is provided. In addition, units for allowing such communication between electronic devices and the optical network may be modularized such that they are interchangeable. In addition, keyed optical fiber ferrule/connector pairs are described.

Claims

1. A method for adding an optical fiber ferrule to an optical fiber, the method comprising:

determining a rotational angle;

arranging at least one of the optical fiber and the optical fiber ferrule to cause the optical fiber to extend through the optical fiber ferrule such that a portion of the optical fiber extends out of each of two opposing ends of the optical fiber ferrule, and such that a physical feature of the optical fiber ferrule is disposed at the rotational angle about the lengthwise axis relative to the flat surface of the optical fiber; and

affixing the optical fiber and the optical fiber ferrule together to maintain the predetermined rotational angle with respect to each other.

2. The method of claim 1, further including cutting the optical fiber to provide a substantially flat surface at a tip of the optical fiber that is at a non-perpendicular angle to a lengthwise axis of the optical fiber.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the rotational angle is a measure of a relative roatation between the substantially flat surface and the physical feature.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical fiber ferrule is elongated in the direction of the axis and has a generally curved outer surface encircling the axis, wherein the physical feature is a flat portion of the outer surface.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the physical feature is either a notch in the outer surface or a protrusion in the outer surface.

6. The method of claim 1, further including polishing the flat surface of the optical fiber.

7. A method for adding an optical fiber ferrule to an optical fiber, the method comprising:

inserting an optical fiber completely through a channel of an optical fiber ferrule;

affixing the optical fiber to the channel; and

forming a physical feature on an outer surface of the optical fiber ferrule, wherein a location of the physical feature on the outer surface depends upon a rotational orientation of the optical fiber within the channel.

8. The method of claim 7, further including cutting the optical fiber to provide a substantially flat surface at a tip of the optical fiber that is at a non-perpendicular angle to a lengthwise axis of the optical fiber.

9. The method of claim 8, further including determining the location of the physical feature depending upon a rotation of the substantially flat surface about the lengthwise axis.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the physical feature is either a notch or a protrusion in the outer surface.

11. An optical connection system, comprising:

an optical fiber ferrule having an outer surface, wherein the outer surface has a shape; and

a structure having a first channel into which the optical fiber ferrule may be inserted and from which the optical fiber ferrule may be removed, wherein the first channel has an inner surface keyed to the shape of the outer surface of the optical fiber ferrule.

12. The optical connection system of claim 11, wherein the optical fiber ferrule has an elongated body, the body has a second channel extending completely through the ferrule along an axis, the second channel is suitable for receiving an optical fiber through the second channel, and the shape of the outer surface is assymetrical about the axis.

13. The optical connection system of claim 12, further including an optical fiber disposed within an entire length of the second channel of the ferrule and fixedly attached to the channel.

14. The optical connection system of claim 13, wherein the optical fiber extends out of the second channel on a first side of the optical fiber ferrule by no more than 3 millimeters and terminates at a tip of the optical fiber, wherein the tip has a flat surface at an angle that is non-orthogonal to the axis.

15. The optical connection system of claim 14, wherein the angle of the flat surface of the tip of the optical fiber is orientated about the axis at a predetermine angle relative to an anomalous physical feature of the outer surface of the optical fiber ferrule.

16. The optical connection system of claim 11, wherein the outer surface of the optical fiber ferrule has a notch and the inner surface of the first channel has a physical feature complementary to the notch.

17. The optical connection system of claim 11, wherein the outer surface of the optical fiber ferrule has a protrusion and the inner surface of the first channel has a physical feature complementary to the protrusion.

18. The optical connection system of claim 11, wherein the outer surface of the optical fiber ferrule has a flattened portion and the inner surface of the first channel has a physical feature complementary to the flattened portion.

19. The optical connection system of claim 11, wherein the outer surface of the optical fiber ferrule is substantially cylindrical except for a first physical feature and the inner surface of the first channel has a second physical feature complementary to the first physical feature.

20. The optical connection system of claim 11, wherein the keying of the inner surface of the first channel to the outer surface of the optical fiber ferrule provides for the optical fiber ferrule to extend at least a predetermined distance into the first channel only if the optical fiber ferrule is at a predetermined rotational orientation with respect to the first channel.
