Abstract

Systems and methods are described for a power aggregation system. In one implementation, a service establishes individual Internet connections to numerous electric resources intermittently connected to the power grid, such as electric vehicles. The Internet connection may be made over the same wire that connects the resource to the power grid. The service optimizes power flows to suit the needs of each resource and each resource owner, while aggregating flows across numerous resources to suit the needs of the power grid. The service can bring vast numbers of electric vehicle batteries online as a new, dynamically aggregated power resource for the power grid. Electric vehicle owners can participate in an electricity trading economy regardless of where they plug into the power grid.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

establishing a communication connection with each of multiple electric resources connected to a power grid; and

individually signaling the electric resources to provide power to or take power from the power grid.

2. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the electric resources comprise energy storage systems.

3. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein individually signaling each electric resource is based in part on metering a power flow between the electric resource and the power grid.

4. The method as recited in claim 3, wherein the metering takes place at or near each electric resource.

5. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

determining an electric network location of each electric resource; and

individually signaling each electric resource based in part on the electric network location.

6. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising scheduling power flows for each of the electric resources based on an optimization of at least some constraints on the connected electric resources.

7. The method as recited in claim 6, further comprising converting generation control signals into resource control signals based on the optimized schedule.

8. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the electric resources comprise mobile electric resources intermittently connected to the power grid at varying locations.

9. The method as recited in claim 8, wherein the mobile electric resources comprise electric vehicles connectable to the power grid.

10. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the signaling includes individually directing the electric resources to provide power to or take power from the power grid at times and rates specific to each electric resource.

11. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

receiving generation control signals from a power grid operator;

scheduling an aggregation of the electric resources to alleviate a grid condition indicated by the generation control signals; and

offering the aggregation as predicted to the power grid operator.

12. The method as recited in claim 11, further comprising contracting with the power grid operator to perform the aggregation in exchange for a compensation.

13. The method as recited in claim 11, further comprising:

predicting trends in available individual electric resources,available aggregate electric resources, and per-user trends comprising connection duration, connection time, disconnection time, connection location, and resource State Of Charge (SOC) at connection; and

basing the aggregation at least in part on the predicted trends.

14. The method as recited in claim 13, wherein predicting the trends is based on learning behaviors of the numerous electric resources.

15. The method as recited in claim 11, wherein the prediction is modified based at least in part on correlating expected future events with past data on available aggregate electric resources.

16. A system, comprising:

a server to communicate with each of multiple electric resources connected to a power grid; and

a connection manager to individually signal the electric resources to exchange power with the power grid.

17. The system as recited in claim 16, wherein the electric resources comprise electric storage systems of electric vehicles, each electric vehicle intermittently connected to the power grid at varying locations.

18. The system as recited in claim 16, further comprising a constraint optimizer to aggregate the exchange of the power according to an optimization of parameters selected or imposed by an electric resource owner, a power grid operator, a physical condition of the power grid, a contract between an administrator of the server and an administrator of the power grid, or an automated grid controller.

19. The system as recited in claim 18, further comprising a prediction engine to learn, infer, or project a trend of the electric resources, electric resource owners, electrical connection location owners, grid operators, or automated grid controllers, wherein an optimization of the aggregation of the exchange of the power is based at least in part on the trend.

20. The system as recited in claim 18, further comprising a contract manager to establish an agreement between an administrator of the server and a power grid operator for an exchange of aggregated power.

21. A system, comprising:

means for individually signaling electric resources over a network, wherein each electric resource is intermittently connected to the power grid at varying locations; and

means for dynamically aggregating power flowing to and from the electric resources via the signaling in response to a condition of the power grid signaled by a grid control signal.
