A method of promoting blood vessel formation in hypoxic or ischemic tissue in a patient in need thereof, comprising contacting said tissue with a biocompatible composition comprising a nitric oxide releasing agent or nitric oxide generating agent thereby generating an effective amount of nitric oxide to said tissue.
- 5. A method of promoting angiogenesis in a subject in need thereof, comprising implanting a biocompatible composition comprising a nitric oxide releasing agent or nitric oxide generating agent into said subject at a tissue locus thereby generating an effective amount of nitric oxide to said tissue.

20. A method of enhancing endothelial repair at site of vascular injury, comprising administering an effective amount of nitric oxide to said site.
-
21. An implantable medical device suitable for use in a human, wherein a coating or film comprising a nitric oxide releasing agent or nitric oxide generating agent is disposed on a surface of said device;
- wherein said device increases angiogenesis by at least 10%, as compared with angiogenesis generated by a device comprising a coating or film without said nitric oxide releasing agent or nitric oxide generating agent.
