Abstract

Systems and methods provide a single E.164 number for voice and data call redirection and telephony services such as caller identification, regardless of in which type of network a dual mode mobile device operates. When the dual mode device registers and is active in a GSM network, temporary routing and status updates are triggered and resultant information is maintained in both networks. A mobile terminated call is routed through an enterprise WLAN with call control within the enterprise being handled by SIP or H.323 signaling, and the call is redirected to the mobile device in the GSM network, where call control is assumed by the SS7 network. Services are provided using the protocols native to the active network, and the single E.164 is used consistently along with or lieu of the temporary routing information for subscriber identity specific functions, such as caller identification and voice mail.

Claims

1. In a network of a first type, a method for redirecting an incoming call to a dual mode device, the method comprising:

receiving a registration update indicating that the dual mode device is registered in a network of a second type, the registration update including temporary routing information;

updating a subscriber database in response to receiving the registration update;

receiving notification of an incoming call directed to the dual mode device;

retrieving the temporary routing information; and

connecting the incoming call to the dual mode device in the PLMN using the temporary routing information.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein connecting the incoming call to the dual mode device comprises establishing a bearer with the network of the second type to deliver the incoming call.

3. The method of claim 1, said registration comprising updating a subscriber database in the network of the second type.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein updating the subscriber database in response to receiving the registration update comprises translating the temporary routing information into an address routable in the network of the first type.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein translating the temporary routing number information comprising translating a temporary routing number to a H.323 address.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein translating the temporary routing number information comprising translating a temporary routing number to a SIP address.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein connecting the incoming call to the dual mode device comprises generating a signaling message recognizable in the network of the second type, the signaling message including the temporary routing information, and transmitting the signaling message as a text message.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving a registration update indicating that the dual mode device is registered in a network of a second type comprises, in a packet-switched (PS) network, receiving a registration update indicating that the dual mode device is registered in a public land mobile network (PLMN).

9. A method for routing a mobile terminated call to a dual mode device, comprising:

receiving the call at a wireline service center associated with an enterprise;

determining that the dual mode device is operating in a PLMN;

retrieving a temporary routing number from an enterprise subscriber record, the temporary routing number identifying the PLMN, and the temporary routing number having been previously received from the PLMN in response to the dual mode device registering in the PLMN; and

routing the call to the PLMN using the temporary routing number.

10. A method for routing incoming calls through a packet-switched (PS) network, the incoming calls being directed to a dual mode device registered in a circuit-switched (CS) network, the method comprising:

receiving registration information from the PS network, the registration information including a subscriber identifier associated with the dual mode device;

in response to receiving the registration information, causing a subscriber database in the CS network to delete a subscriber record associated with the subscriber identifier such that subsequent calls originated in the CS network are routed initially to the PS network.

11. A method for providing a telephony service to a dual mode device operable in a network of a first type and in a network of a second type, the method comprising:

associating a unique subscriber identifier with the dual mode device;

registering the dual mode device in the network of the first type, comprising storing the subscriber identifier in a first subscriber record in a subscriber database associated with the network of the first type;

registering the dual mode device in the network of the second type, comprising storing the subscriber identifier in a second subscriber record in a subscriber database associated with the network of the second type; and

in response to a request for the telephony service, retrieving the subscriber identifier from the first subscriber record and providing the telephony service according to the protocols of the network of the first type if the dual mode device is operating in the network of the first type.

The method of 11, further comprising in response to a request for the telephony service, retrieving the subscriber identifier from the second subscriber record and providing the telephony service according to the protocols of the network of the second type if the dual mode device is operating in the network of the second type.

13. The method of 11, wherein providing the telephony service comprises providing a telephony service that is subscriber identity reliant.

14. The method of 11, wherein providing the telephony service comprises providing a telephony service that identifies the dual mode device.

15. The method of 11, wherein providing the telephony service comprises providing Caller Identification.

16. The method of 11, wherein providing the telephony service comprises providing Voice Mail Service.

17. The method of 11, wherein associating a unique subscriber identifier with the dual mode device comprises associated an E.164 number with the dual mode device.
