Abstract

An apparatus for pumping fluid through a flexible tubing is provided. The apparatus uses an electromagnet to activate upstream and downstream pinchers to control fluid flow. An armature is configured to compress the tubing, and in combination with the pinchers creates a fluid flow in the flexible tubing. Downstream occlusions in the tubing can be detected by monitoring for conditions wherein the armature does not close fully. Upstream occlusions in the tubing can be detected by monitoring for conditions wherein the armature does not open fully. A control module can be incorporated into the device for controlling the movement of the components and monitoring for occlusion conditions.

Claims

1. An apparatus for pumping fluid through a flexible tubing, wherein the tubing has an upstream end and a downstream end, comprising:

an upstream pincher having a closed position and an open position, wherein fluid flow from the upstream end of the tubing into the apparatus is prevented when the upstream pincher is in the closed position;

an armature configured to compress the tubing when in a first position and uncompress the tubing when in a second position;

a downstream pincher having a closed position and an open position, wherein fluid flow from the apparatus to the downstream end of the tubing is prevented when the downstream pincher is in the closed position;

a control module configured to move the armature to the first position when the upstream pincher is in the closed position and to the second position when the upstream pincher is in the open position.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the armature is moved to the second position by an electromagnet.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least one magnet, wherein the armature is moved to the first position by the at least one magnet.

4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the downstream pincher and the upstream pincher are activated by an electromagnet.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the downstream pincher and the upstream pincher are mounted on a rocker arm.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the rocker arm comprises a magnet.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the downstream pincher pushes the tubing against a downstream detent and the upstream pincher pushes the tubing against an upstream detent.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an upstream sensor configured to detect when the upstream pincher is in the open position.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising a downstream sensor configured to detect when the downstream pincher is in the open position.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an occlusion detector, wherein the occlusion detector detects an upstream occlusion.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the occlusion detector detects a downstream occlusion.

12. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a programming module configured to change the rate at which the control module moves the armature.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the programming module is configured to change the rate at which the upstream pincher and the downstream pincher move to the open and closed positions.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the programming module is configured to display the rate at which the control module moves the armature and the rate at which the upstream pincher and the downstream pincher move.

15. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the programming module is connected to a container containing fluid to be pumped through the tubing.

16. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein a container containing fluid to be pumped through the tubing comprises the programming module.

17. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the rocker arm magnet is configured to move the upstream pincher to the closed position when the armature electromagnet is deenergized.

18. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the downstream pincher and the upstream pincher are mounted on a leaf spring mounted on the rocker arm, and wherein the leaf spring is configured to move the upstream pincher and the downstream pincher to the closed positions when the pincher electromagnet is deenergized.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the leaf spring is configured to move the upstream pincher and the downstream pincher to the closed positions when the pincher electromagnet is energized.

20. An infusion pump comprising a detector for detecting an occlusion in an infusion tube, comprising:

an armature configured to compress the infusion tube when in a first position and uncompress the infusion tube when in a second position;

a sensor configured to determine when the armature is in the first position and in the second position; and

an occlusion control module linked to the sensor and configured to determine when the armature fails to reach the first position or the second position, thereby indicating an occlusion in the infusion tube.

21. The infusion pump of claim 20, wherein the occlusion control module is configured to detect that the armature has not reached the first position thereby indicating an upstream occlusion.

22. The infusion pump of claim 20, wherein the occlusion control module is configured to detect that the armature has not reached the second position thereby indicating a downstream occlusion.

23. The infusion pump of claim 20, wherein the occlusion control module is configured to detect the armature has reached the first position.

24. An infusion pump comprising:

a flow sensor configured to detect fluid flow through a section of tubing;

a measurement module linked to the flow sensor and configured to measure the rate of fluid flow through the section of tubing;

a first control input configured to set the rate of fluid flow to the measured rate;

a second control input configured to activate the infusion pump to pump fluid at the set rate.

25. The infusion pump of claim 24, further comprising a display configured to display the measured rate of fluid flow and the set rate of fluid flow.
