Abstract

Methods create images viewable under different selected angles on optical storage devices and other photosensitive surfaces and optical storage devices with super-imposed images. Generally, a photosensitive surface is exposed with multiple diffraction patterns creating super-imposed images. These diffraction patterns create super-imposed images on the photosensitive surfaces, which can be read by either a human or a computer.

Claims

1. A method of forming discrete diffractive elements, the method comprising:

processing a digital instructional file to generate a configuration for a plurality of discrete diffractive elements configured to produce a complex light wavefront; and

serially recording each of the plurality of discrete diffractive elements by exposing a rotating photosensitive medium with a single non-referenced light source,

wherein the serial recording is performed absent other light interference of the light source.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of discrete diffractive elements are non-uniform.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the rotating photosensitive medium rotates about an axis parallel to the light source.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the complex light wavefront is a hologram.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the complex light wavefront is a digital image.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the complex light wavefront is recorded spatially in 3 dimensions in the rotating photosensitive medium.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein one or more of the plurality of discrete diffractive elements correspond to a pixel description in the digital instructional file.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the serial recording is accomplished with one laser impact point.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the one laser impact point comprises a size of about 0.3 microns.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein laser impact points are superimposed to form a diffractive element larger than about 0.3 microns.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the serial recording is performed utilizing single-beam hardware.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the serial recording is performed by turning a laser on and off in the nanoseconds range.

13. An apparatus with multiple diffraction images, the apparatus comprising:

a substrate;

a plurality of first diffractive elements coupled to the substrate, wherein the configuration of each of the first diffractive elements was calculated by processing a digital instructional file, and wherein each of the first diffractive elements was serially recorded by exposing the substrate with a single non-referenced light source absent other interference of the light source; and

a plurality of second diffractive elements coupled to the substrate, wherein the configuration of each of the second diffractive elements was calculated by processing a digital instructional file, and wherein each of the second diffractive elements was serially recorded by exposing the substrate with a single non-referenced light source absent other interference of the light source.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the plurality of first diffractive elements form an image when viewed at a first angle, and wherein the plurality of second diffractive elements form an image when viewed at a second angle different from the first angle.

15. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein one or more of the plurality of first diffractive elements correspond to a pixel description in the digital instructional file.

16. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the serial recording is accomplished with one laser impact point.

17. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the one laser impact point comprises a size of about 0.3 microns.

18. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the serial recording is performed utilizing single-beam hardware.

19. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the serial recording is performed by turning a laser on and off in the nanoseconds range.

20. A method for writing data, the method comprising:

beginning at an initial location, exposing a rotating photosensitive substrate to a laser with a first maximum intensity, wherein the laser is configured to traverse the photosensitive substrate at a first distance per revolution; and

beginning again at the initial location, exposing the rotating photosensitive substrate to the laser with a second maximum intensity, wherein the laser is configured to traverse the photosensitive substrate at a second distance per revolution.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the initial location is at a fixed radius from the axis of rotation of the photosensitive substrate.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the initial location is at a fixed angular position of the photosensitive substrate.
