Abstract

A system is presented providing content to a plurality of handheld devices (including musical selections). The devices can access a server over the Internet via a WIFI or other similar wireless interconnection and can download songs requested by a user from the server or from other users using, e.g., a P2P protocol. All downloads are governed by applicable DRM rules. Content and playlists may also be pushed by a server from other sources and means including, e.g., podcasting, based on predetermined rules, favorite preferences of users, and other criteria.

Claims

1. A method for sending a digital file of an audio and/or video message created on a wireless portable device to a recipient'"'"'s device, the method comprising:

performing the following in a wireless portable device;

receiving an audio and/or video message from a user of the wireless portable device;

creating a digital file from the received audio and/or video message;

storing the digital file on the wireless portable device; and

sending the digital file to a recipient'"'"'s device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the wireless portable device comprises one or both of the following:

(i) an audio and/or video capture device and (ii) an input for an audio and/or video capture device.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising selecting the recipient.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the recipient is selected from one or more of the following:

a buddy list, a list of available peer-to-peer users compiled by the wireless portable device, a list of members of a chat room, an address list, or a list received from a central server.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the recipient is selected before receiving the audio and/or video message from the user of the wireless portable device.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein the recipient is selected after receiving the audio and/or video message from the user of the wireless portable device.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein the recipient is selected when the wireless portable device is not in communication with the recipient'"'"'s device, and wherein the method further comprises sending the digital file to the recipient'"'"'s device after the wireless portable device is placed in communication with the recipient'"'"'s device.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein sending the digital file to the recipient'"'"'s device comprises streaming the digital file to the recipient'"'"'s device as it is being created.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising sending the digital file to multiple recipients'"'"' devices.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the multiple recipients are selected by one of the following:

via a pre-defined group, by making multiple selections of individual recipients, by selecting from automated groupings, or by selecting from groupings compiled on a central server.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the digital file is sent to the recipient'"'"'s device through one of the following:

a WiFi broadcast, a peer-to-peer connection, a network, a community messaging system, or a central server.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the digital file is sent to the recipient'"'"'s device through a central server, and wherein the central server is operative to cache the digital file if the recipient'"'"'s device is not online.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the digital file is sent to the recipient'"'"'s device using a file transfer protocol capable of transmitting the digital file to the recipient'"'"'s device.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the file transfer protocol comprises an instant messaging protocol capable of transferring a digital file attachment.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the digital file is in at least one of the following formats:

a compressed format, an uncompressed format, a secure format, and an unsecure format.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprising inserting a music clip into the digital file.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising mixing the music clip with the audio and/or video message into the digital file.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the mixing is performed as the audio and/or video message is being received.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the mixing is performed after the audio and/or video message has been received.

20. The method of claim 1 further comprising sending a music clip to the recipient'"'"'s device, wherein the recipient'"'"'s device is operative to mix the music clip with the digital file.

21. The method of claim 20 further comprising sending mixing information to the recipient'"'"'s device.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein the wireless portable device comprises a single push button that, when pressed, triggers the receiving, creating, storing, and sending acts.

23. A wireless portable device comprising:

an input device operative to receive an audio and/or video message from a user of the wireless portable device;

a controller operative to;

create a digital file from the received audio and/or video message; and

store the digital file on the wireless portable device; and

a wireless transceiver operative to send the digital file to a recipient'"'"'s device.

24. The wireless portable device of claim 23, wherein the input device comprises one of the following:

(i) an audio and/or video capture device and (ii) an input for an audio and/or video capture device.

25. The wireless portable device of claim 23, wherein the controller is further operative to select the recipient.

26. The wireless portable device of claim 25, wherein the recipient is selected from one or more of the following:

a buddy list, a list of available peer-to-peer users compiled by the wireless portable device, a list of members of a chat room, an address list, or a list received from a central server.

27. The wireless portable device of claim 25, wherein the recipient is selected before receiving the audio and/or video message from the user of the wireless portable device.

28. The wireless portable device of claim 25, wherein the recipient is selected after receiving the audio and/or video message from the user of the wireless portable device.

The wireless portable device of claim 25, wherein the recipient is selected when the wireless portable device is not in communication with the recipient'"'"'s device, and wherein the digital file is sent to the recipient'"'"'s device after the wireless portable device is placed in communication with the recipient'"'"'s device.

30. The wireless portable device of claim 23, wherein the digital file is sent to the recipient'"'"'s device by streaming the digital file to the recipient'"'"'s device as it is being created.

31. The wireless portable device of claim 23, wherein the controller is further operative to send the digital file to multiple recipients'"'"' devices.

32. The wireless portable device of claim 31, wherein the multiple recipients are selected by one of the following:

via a pre-defined group, by making multiple selections of individual recipients, by selecting from automated groupings, or by selecting from groupings compiled on a central server.

33. The wireless portable device of claim 23, wherein the digital file is sent to the recipient'"'"'s device through one of the following:

34. The wireless portable device of claim 33, wherein the digital file is sent to the recipient'"'"'s device through a central server, and wherein the central server is operative to cache the digital file if the recipient'"'"'s device is not online.

35. The wireless portable device of claim 23, wherein the digital file is sent to the recipient'"'"'s device using a file transfer protocol capable of transmitting the digital file to the recipient'"'"'s device.

36. The wireless portable device of claim 35, wherein the file transfer protocol comprises an instant messaging protocol capable of transferring a digital file attachment.

37. The wireless portable device of claim 23, wherein the digital file is in at least one of the following formats:

a compressed format, an uncompressed format, a secure format, and an unsecure format.

38. The wireless portable device of claim 23, wherein the controller is further operative to insert a music clip into the digital file.

39. The wireless portable device of claim 38, wherein the controller is further operative to mix the music clip with the audio and/or video message into the digital file.

40. The wireless portable device of claim 39, wherein the mixing is performed as the audio and/or video message is being received.

41. The wireless portable device of claim 39, wherein the mixing is performed after the audio and/or video message has been received.

42. The wireless portable device of claim 23, wherein the controller is further operative to send a music clip to the recipient'"'"'s device, wherein the recipient'"'"'s device is operative to mix the music clip with the digital file.

43. The wireless portable device of claim 42, wherein the controller is further operative to send mixing information to the recipient'"'"'s device.

44. The wireless portable device of claim 23, wherein the wireless portable device comprises a single push button that, when pressed, triggers the receiving, creating, storing, and sending acts.
