Abstract

A storage and playback device is capable of being detachably coupled to an output device, such as speakers of an automobile. The device includes a wireless transceiver to receive compressed digital content automatically from a computer system via a wireless local area network based on user defined preferences input into the computer system. The wireless transceiver is communicably coupled to the wireless local area network when the wireless transceiver is a predetermined distance from a wireless local area network access point. The device also includes a decoder and converter to decompress and convert the digital content. The decompressed and converted digital content is sent to be played on the output device.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

presenting a plurality of sources of network-based content to a user via a server associated with a network;

receiving, at the server, a selection by the user of one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content;

receiving, at the server, a specification of one or more rules to be applied in connection with acquiring content from the selected one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content;

transferring, from the server to a memory device associated with a computer, the one or more rules and one or more pointers to the selected one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content, wherein the computer is configured to automatically acquire content from the selected one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content using the one or more pointers and the one or more rules.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the network is the Internet.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the one or more rules comprises a specification of a time of day at which the content is to be acquired.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the one or more rules comprises a specification that the content be acquired periodically.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the presenting comprises presenting a user interface that comprises a plurality of general content subject links.

6. A computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

presenting a plurality of sources of network-based content to a user;

receiving a selection by the user of one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content;

receiving a specification of one or more rules to be applied in connection with acquiring content from the selected one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content;

transferring, to a memory device associated with a computer, the one or more rules and one or more pointers to the selected one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content, wherein the computer is configured to automatically acquire content from the selected one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content using the one or more pointers and the one or more rules.

7. The computer-readable medium of claim 6, wherein the network is the Internet.

8. The computer-readable medium of claim 6, wherein at least one of the one or more rules comprises a specification of a time of day at which the content is to be acquired.

9. The computer-readable medium of claim 6, wherein at least one of the one or more rules comprises a specification that the content be acquired periodically.

10. The computer-readable medium of claim 6, wherein the presenting comprises presenting a user interface that comprises a plurality of general content subject links.

11. An apparatus comprising:

a memory configured to store software instructions; and

a processor coupled to the memory and configured to;

present a plurality of sources of network-based content to a user;

receive a selection by the user of one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content;

receive a specification of one or more rules to be applied in connection with acquiring content from the selected one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content;

transfer, to a memory device associated with a computer, the one or more rules and one or more pointers to the selected one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content, wherein the computer is configured to automatically acquire content from the selected one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content using the one or more pointers and the one or more rules.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the network is the Internet.

13. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein at least one of the one or more rules comprises a specification of a time of day at which the content is to be acquired.

14. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein at least one of the one or more rules comprises a specification that the content be acquired periodically.

15. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the processor is further configured to present a user interface that comprises a plurality of general content subject links.

16. A system comprising:

a server configured to;

present a plurality of sources of network-based content to a user;

receive a selection by the user of one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content;

receive a specification of one or more rules to be applied in connection with acquiring content from the selected one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content;

transfer, to a memory device associated with a computer, the one or more rules and one or more pointers to the selected one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content;

the computer communicatively coupled to the server over a network, wherein the computer is configured to;

automatically acquire content from the selected one or more of the plurality of sources of network-based content using the one or more pointers and the one or more rules; and

store the content in a memory device; and

a media playback system communicatively coupled to the computer via a local area network, wherein the media playback system is configured to;

receive the content from the computer; and

render the content.

17. A method for transferring content, the method comprising:

storing data representative of a voice message in a memory of a vehicle-mounted computing device; and

transferring the data representative of the voice message from the vehicle-mounted computing device to a second computing device, wherein the second computing device is configured to replay the voice message.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the transferring the data representative of the voice message comprises automatically transferring the data representative of the voice message from the vehicle-mounted computing device to the second computing device in response to the vehicle-mounted computing device establishing a connection with a local area network that includes the second computing device.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the vehicle-mounted computing device is removably mounted within a vehicle and includes a connector port configured to receive a communication cable for connecting the vehicle-mounted device with the second computing device.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising receiving the voice message at an input device associated with the vehicle-mounted computing device.

21. A vehicle-mounted apparatus comprising a computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

storing data representative of a voice message in a memory associated with the vehicle-mounted apparatus; and

transferring the data representative of the voice message to a computing device, wherein the computing device is configured to replay the voice message.

22. The vehicle-mounted apparatus of claim 21, wherein the transferring the data representative of the voice message comprises automatically transferring the data representative of the voice message from the vehicle-mounted apparatus to the computing device in response to the vehicle-mounted apparatus establishing a connection with a local area network that includes the computing device.

23. The vehicle-mounted apparatus of claim 21, wherein the vehicle-mounted apparatus is removably mounted within a vehicle and includes a connector port configured to receive a communication cable for connecting the vehicle-mounted apparatus with the computing device.

24. The vehicle-mounted apparatus of claim 21, wherein the operations further comprise receiving the voice message from an input device associated with the vehicle-mounted apparatus.

25. A method for transferring content, the method comprising:

storing data representative of a voice message in a memory of a first computing device; and

transferring the data representative of the voice message from the first computing device to a vehicle-mounted computing device, wherein the vehicle-mounted computing device is configured to replay the voice message.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the transferring the data representative of the voice message comprises automatically transferring the data representative of the voice message from the first computing device to the vehicle-mounted computing device in response to the first computing device establishing a connection with the vehicle-mounted computing device via a local area network.

27. The method of claim 25, further comprising receiving the voice message at an input device associated with the first computing device.

28. A computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, upon execution by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

storing data representative of a voice message in a memory; and

transferring the data representative of the voice message to a vehicle-mounted computing device, wherein the vehicle-mounted computing device is configured to replay the voice message.

29. The computer-readable medium of claim 28, wherein the transferring the data representative of the voice message comprises automatically transferring the data representative of the voice message to the vehicle-mounted apparatus in response to the vehicle-mounted apparatus establishing a connection with a local area network that includes the processor.

30. The computer-readable medium of claim 28, wherein the operations further comprise receiving the voice message at an input device communicatively coupled to the processor.
