Abstract

A method is provided to operate a computer to interoperate with a portable media player. The method includes processing signals provided from the portable media player to the computer that are indicative of whether an accessory has been connected to the portable media player, to determine whether the accessory has been connected to the portable media player. Based on a determination that the accessory has been connected to the portable media player, physiologic data of a user that was provided to the portable media player from a wireless physiologic data gathering device, is received from the portable media player, into the computer, via the accessory.

Claims

1. A method for handling playlists and workout templates for a portable media player, the method comprising:

in a host computer, performing operations for;

providing, to the portable media player, a workout template that defines exercise cues to be provided to a user of the portable media player; and

providing, to the portable media player, a playlist that defines media playback to be provided to the user of the portable media player, wherein the playlist is associated with the workout template.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, from the portable media player, an indication of behavior of a user with respect to playback of media in association with a particular workout template; and

based at least in part on the indication of the behavior, associating a playlist with the particular workout template.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein associating a playlist with the particular workout template comprises:

modifying an existing playlist associated with the particular workout template.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, from the portable media player, an indication of user behavior during playback of the playlist and relative to the exercise cues in the associated workout template;

determining that the user behavior is different than a predetermined behavior; and

modifying at least one of the playlist and the workout template to correlate to the user behavior.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

interoperating with a media commerce server to receive the workout template with which the playlist is associated.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, from the portable media player, physiologic data that was provided to the portable media player from the at least one physiologic data gathering device; and

providing, to the portable media player, an updated workout template with exercise cues adjusted in accordance with the physiologic data.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the exercise cues are audio cues for a workout corresponding to the workout template.

8. A computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause a computer to perform a method for handling playlists and workout templates for a portable media player, the method comprising:

providing, to the portable media player, a workout template that defines exercise cues to be provided to a user of the portable media player; and

providing, to the portable media player, a playlist that defines media playback to be provided to the user of the portable media player, wherein the playlist is associated with the workout template.

9. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 8, further comprising:

receiving, from the portable media player, an indication of behavior of a user with respect to playback of media in association with a particular workout template; and

based at least in part on the indication of the behavior, associating a playlist with the particular workout template.

10. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 9, wherein associating a playlist with the particular workout template comprises:

modifying an existing playlist associated with the particular workout template.

11. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 8, further comprising:

receiving, from the portable media player, an indication of user behavior during playback of the playlist and relative to the exercise cues in the associated workout template;

determining that the user behavior is different than a predetermined behavior; and

providing, to the portable media player, a modified version of at least one of the playlist and the workout template that have been modified to correlate to the user behavior.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 8, further comprising:

interoperating with a media commerce server to receive the workout template with which the playlist is associated.

13. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 8, further comprising:

receiving, from the portable media player, physiologic data that was provided to the portable media player from the at least one physiologic data gathering device; and

providing, to the portable media player, an updated workout template with exercise cues adjusted in accordance with the physiologic data.

14. A host computer that handles playlists and workout templates for a portable media player, comprising:

a processor;

a memory coupled to the processor;

wherein the host computer is configured to;

provide, to the portable media player, a workout template that defines exercise cues to be provided to a user of the portable media player; and

provide, to the portable media player, a playlist that defines media playback to be provided to the user of the portable media player, wherein the playlist is associated with the workout template.

15. The host computer of claim 14, wherein the host computer is configured to:

receive, from the portable media player, an indication of behavior of a user with respect to playback of media in association with a particular workout template; and

based at least in part on the indication of the behavior, associate a playlist with the particular workout template.

16. The host computer of claim 15, wherein, when associating a playlist with the particular workout template, the host computer is configured to:

modify an existing playlist associated with the particular workout template.

17. The host computer of claim 14, wherein the host computer is configured to:

receive, from the portable media player, an indication of user behavior during playback of the playlist and relative to the exercise cues in the associated workout template;

determine that the user behavior is different than a predetermined behavior; and

provide, to the portable media player, a modified version of at least one of the playlist and the workout template that have been modified to correlate to the user behavior.

18. The host computer of claim 14, wherein the host computer is configured to:

interoperate with a media commerce server to receive the workout template with which the playlist is associated.

19. The host computer of claim 14, wherein the host computer is configured to:

receive, from the portable media player, physiologic data that was provided to the portable media player from the at least one physiologic data gathering device; and

provide, to the portable media player, an updated workout template with exercise cues adjusted in accordance with the physiologic data.
