Abstract

A multiprocessor chip for operating a hand held imaging device with a CMOS image sensor such as a digital camera. The multiprocessor chip has multiple processing units configured for working in parallel and an image sensor interface for receiving data from the CMOS image sensor. The multiple processing units simultaneously process the data from the image sensor interface.

Claims

1. A multiprocessor chip for a hand held imaging device with a CMOS image sensor, the multiprocessor chip comprising:

multiple processing units configured for working in parallel; and

,

an image sensor interface for receiving data from the CMOS image sensor;

wherein,

the multiple processing units are configured to simultaneously process the data.

The multiprocessor chip according to claim 1 further comprising an input FIFO (first in, first out) for receiving data from the image sensor interface and inputting the data to the multiple processing units, and an output FIFO for receiving processed data and arranging the processed data to be read in a first in, first out order.

3. The multiprocessor chip according to claim 2 further comprising a crossbar switch for connecting each of the processing units.

4. The multiprocessor chip according to claim 3 wherein the multiple processing units are four processing units connected by the crossbar switch and separately connected to the output FIFO.

The multiprocessor chip according to claim 4 further comprising a central processor wherein each of the processing units have memory for microcode that operatively controls that processing unit, the central processor being connected to each of the processing units for writing the microcode for that processing unit into the memory.

6. The multiprocessor chip according to claim 5 wherein the data is input image data and the four processing units are programmed perform one or more processing tasks selected from:

rotating the input image data;

colour converting the input image data into another color space; and

,

dithering the input image data for drop-on-demand printing of the image.

7. The multiprocessor chip according to claim 6 further comprising a printhead interface for receiving the processed data from the output FIFO and transmitting the processed data to an inkjet printhead.

8. The multiprocessor chip according to claim 7 wherein each of the processing units have at least one address generator for the processed data.

9. The multiprocessor chip according to claim 8 further comprising a color display interface connected to the data cache for receiving the processed data for transmission to a color LCD display.

10. The multiprocessor chip according to claim 8 further comprising a keyboard interface for user input of instructions to the central processor unit such that the central processor rewrites the microcode in the memory within each of the processing units.

The multiprocessor chip according to claim 8 further comprising a scanner interface for receiving scanned image data of an image encoding image processing instructions in a machine readable form, the scanner interface being configured to decode the scanned image data and send the image processing instructions to the input FIFO.

The multiprocessor chip according to claim 8 wherein the inkjet printhead is incorporated into the hand held imaging device, the hand held imaging device being configured to receive a print media roll on which the inkjet printhead prints, the print media roll being removable and replaceable, and the multiprocessor chip further comprising an authentication chip interface for interrogating an authentication chip in the print media roll for authentication information.
