Abstract

Vehicle with an occupant safety system includes an occupant safety system designed to reduce injury to an occupant during an accident involving the vehicle and a processor coupled to the safety system and that receives at least one inertial property of the vehicle and information about a portion of a road ahead of the vehicle in its travel direction. If the processor determines, based on the at least one inertial property and the information, that the vehicle is unlikely to safely travel that portion of the road, the processor initiates action to ensure safe travel of the vehicle or safety of the occupant. The inertial property of the vehicle may be provided by an inertial measurement unit (IMU) that measures acceleration in three orthogonal directions and angular velocity about three orthogonal axes, all at a substantially common location. The occupant safety system may include one or more inflatable airbags.

Claims

1. A land vehicle, comprising:

an occupant safety system that is designed to reduce injury to an occupant during an accident involving the vehicle; and

a processor coupled to said safety system and that receives at least one inertial property of the vehicle and information about a portion of a road ahead of the vehicle in a travel direction of the vehicle,

whereby if said processor determines, based on the at least one inertial property and the information, that the vehicle is unlikely to safely travel that portion of the road, said processor is configured to initiate action to ensure safe travel of the vehicle or safety of the occupant.

2. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein said processor is configured to actuate said safety system.

3. The vehicle of claim 1, further comprising at least one accelerometer such that the at least one inertial property of the vehicle is acceleration of the vehicle.

4. The vehicle of claim 1, further comprising a tri-axial accelerometer that measures acceleration of the vehicle in three orthogonal directions such that the at least one inertial property of the vehicle is acceleration of the vehicle in the three orthogonal directions.

5. The vehicle of claim 1, further comprising at least one gyroscope such that the at least one inertial property of the vehicle is angular velocity of the vehicle.

6. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein said processor embodies a pattern recognition technique for analyzing the at least one inertial property.

7. The vehicle of claim 6, wherein said pattern recognition technique is a neural network.

The vehicle of claim 1, further comprising at least one accelerometer and at least one gyroscope such that the at least one inertial property includes acceleration of the vehicle in three orthogonal directions and angular velocity of the vehicle about three orthogonal axes, the accelerations and angular velocities being measured at a substantially common location.

9. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein said processor analyzes the at least one inertial property of the vehicle to determine at least one of center of mass of the vehicle, load and moments of inertia.

10. The vehicle of claim 1, further comprising an inertial measurement unit (IMU).

11. The vehicle of claim 10, further comprising at least one additional IMU arranged on an axle of the vehicle and that provides at least one inertial property to said processor.

12. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein the information about the portion of the road ahead of the vehicle is obtained from a digital map.

13. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein the information about the portion of the road ahead of the vehicle is obtained using telematics.

14. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein the action is issuance of a warning to a driver of the vehicle.

15. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein the action is notification to an off-vehicle site.

16. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein said processor is configured to predict whether the vehicle will rollover on the road.

The vehicle of claim 16, further comprising at least one accelerometer and at least one gyroscope such that the at least one inertial property includes acceleration of the vehicle in three orthogonal directions and angular velocity of the vehicle about three orthogonal axes, the accelerations and angular velocities being measured at a substantially common location.

18. A land vehicle, comprising:

an occupant safety system that is designed to reduce injury to an occupant during an accident involving the vehicle; and

a processor coupled to said safety system and that receives at least one inertial property of the vehicle and information about a portion of a road ahead of the vehicle in a travel direction of the vehicle,

whereby if said processor determines, based on the at least one inertial property and the information, that the vehicle is unlikely to safely travel that portion of the road, said processor is configured to initiate action to ensure safe travel of the vehicle or safety of the occupant,

said processor being configured to actuate said safety system,

said processor embodying a pattern recognition technique for analyzing the at least one inertial property.

19. The vehicle of claim 18, wherein said pattern recognition technique is a neural network.

20. A land vehicle, comprising:

an occupant safety system that is designed to reduce injury to an occupant during an accident involving the vehicle; and

a processor coupled to said safety system and that receives at least one inertial property of the vehicle and information about a portion of a road ahead of the vehicle in a travel direction of the vehicle,

whereby if said processor determines, based on the at least one inertial property and the information, that the vehicle is unlikely to safely travel that portion of the road, said processor is configured to initiate action to ensure safe travel of the vehicle or safety of the occupant,

wherein the information about the portion of the road ahead of the vehicle is obtained from a digital map or using telematics, and

wherein the action is issuance of a warning to a driver of the vehicle or notification to an off-vehicle site.
