Abstract

The invention provides a device and method for wireless transmission of energy. An electromagnetic field used for transmitting energy is generated using a resonator system comprising a plurality of weakly coupled resonators, the resonator system having a plurality of eigenmodes with different eigenfrequencies. At least one generator is coupled to one of the resonators. The resonator is configured to operate the resonator system at one of the plurality of eigenmodes, thereby generating a spatially coherent magnetic field adapted for transmitting energy to an appliance.

Claims

1. A device for wireless transmission of energy comprising:

a resonator system comprising a plurality of weakly coupled resonators, the resonator system having a plurality of eigenmodes with different eigenfrequencies; and

at least one generator coupled to one of the resonators;

wherein the generator is configured to operate the resonator system at one of the plurality of eigenmodes, thereby generating a spatially coherent magnetic field adapted for transmitting energy to an appliance.

2. The device according to claim 1, wherein the at least one generator is adapted to excite the resonator coupled to the generator at the eigenfrequency of said one of the plurality of eigenmodes.

3. The device according to claim 1 wherein the generator comprises an AC generator providing and alternating current or voltage to the resonator coupled to the generator.

4. The device according to claim 1, wherein the generator comprises an amplifier and a feedback circuitry for refeeding a part of the excitation signal to the amplifier to form an inherently stable oscillator system oscillating at the eigenfrequency of said one of the plurality of eigenmodes.

5. The device according to claim 4, wherein the at least one generator comprises a frequency selective feedback path adapted to select any one of the eigenfrequencies.

6. The device according to claim 5, wherein the feedback path comprises power amplifier, a branch circuit, an isolation amplifier and an electrically tunable band-pass filter.

7. The device according to claim 6, wherein the power amplifier is adapted for zero-voltage and/or zero-current switching.

8. The device according to claim 1, wherein the at least one generator is adapted to excite the resonator coupled to the generator at a frequency that is a subharmonic of the eigenfrequency of said one of the plurality of eigenmodes.

9. The device according to claim 1, the device comprising two or more generators, the generators being coupled to different resonators and being adapted to excite the respective resonators at different eigenfrequencies.

10. The device according to claim 1, wherein the at least one generator is configured to operate the resonator system at the eigenmode having the highest eigenfrequency.

11. The device according to claim 1, wherein all resonators of the resonator system have the same intrinsic resonance frequency.

12. The device according to claim 1, wherein the resonators comprise an oscillating circuit.

13. The device according to claim 12, wherein the oscillating circuit comprises a coil formed of a sheet metal strip.

14. The device according to claim 1, wherein the appliance comprises a storage battery, in particular a storage battery of an electric vehicle, the device being configured to charge the storage battery.

15. The device according to claim 1, farther comprising a means for monitoring the voltage or current at the resonators and a feedback path for providing the monitored voltage or current to the generator.

A receiving device configured to receive energy from a device for wireless transmission of energy, preferably the device according to claim 1, which is arranged in the drive system of an electric vehicle and coupled to the storage battery of the electric vehicle by using the power electronics of the drive system.

17. Use of the device according to claim 1, as a sensor and for wireless transmission of the metered values by detecting a change of the resonance frequency, the input power or a phase shift between voltage and current of the resonator system.

18. A method for wirelessly transmitting energy to an appliance, the method comprising the step of:

providing a resonator system comprising a plurality of weakly coupled resonators, the resonator system having a plurality of eigenmodes with different eigenfrequencies;

driving at least one generator coupled to one of the resonators to operate the resonator system at one of the plurality of eigenmodes, thereby generating a spatially coherent magnetic field adapted for transmitting energy to an appliance.
