Abstract

Information is presented to a user by accessing a library of electronic publications that includes a first publication, generating a representation of the first publication in an electronic bookshelf, determining a state for the first publication and modifying the representation of the first publication to reflect the state of the first publication.

Claims

1. A method of presenting information to a user, the method comprising:

presenting, within an electronic book reader application on an electronic device, a representation of an electronic book that includes an electronic representation of a paper page;

enabling a user to interact with the page through a touch screen control to navigate through the electronic book;

detecting that a user has touched a portion of the electronic representation of the paper page;

detecting that the user intended to hold the touched portion; and

presenting, in response to detecting that the user intended to hold the touched portion, a menu of commands related to the touched portion of the electronic representation of a paper page.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein detecting that the user intended to hold the touched portion includes detecting that the user has touched the portion of the electronic representation of the page for more than a threshold period of time.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein detecting that the user intended to hold the touched portion includes detecting that an area of the touched portion has expanded after a threshold period of time has elapsed indicated that a user has applied increased pressure.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein detecting that the user intended to hold the touched portion includes detecting that the electronic device has been lowered.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

identifying content related to the touched portion;

using the identified content to identify commands for incorporation within the menu of commands; and

presenting the identified commands within the menu of commands.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

identifying content related to the touched portion, and

using the identified content to identify applications for incorporation within the menu of commands; and

presenting the identified applications within the menu of commands.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein using the identified content to identify applications includes identifying additional electronic publications available in an electronic bookstore related to the content appearing in the touched portion.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein using the identified content to identify applications includes identifying a dictionary or encyclopedia entry related to the content appearing in the touched portion.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein using the identified content to identify applications includes identifying applications related to the content appearing in the touched portion.

10. A system, comprising a processor and instructions that when performed on the processor cause the processor to perform operations that include:

presenting, within an electronic book reader application on an electronic device, a representation of an electronic book that includes an electronic representation of a paper page;

enabling a user to interact with the page through a touch screen control to navigate through the electronic book;

detecting that a user has touched a portion of the electronic representation of the paper page;

detecting that the user intended to hold the touched portion; and

presenting, in response to detecting that the user intended to hold the touched portion, a menu of commands related to the touched portion of the electronic representation of a paper page.

11. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions that when executed on a processor cause the processor to perform operations that include:

presenting, within an electronic book reader application on an electronic device, a representation of an electronic book that includes an electronic representation of a paper page;

enabling a user to interact with the page through a touch screen control to navigate through the electronic book;

detecting that a user has touched a portion of the electronic representation of the paper page;

detecting that the user intended to hold the touched portion; and

presenting, in response to detecting that the user intended to hold the touched portion, a menu of commands related to the touched portion of the electronic representation of a paper page.
