Abstract

Various embodiments provide a Web browser that employs a relevancy algorithm to make an educated guess as to the likelihood of a user'"'"'s intended destination when the user begins to enter text into a browser'"'"'s address bar. In one or more embodiments, the relevancy algorithm employs various parameters and assigns weights to the parameters to arrive at a collection of suggestions to provide to the user. By using various rules, associated weightings, and the relevancy algorithm, relevant suggestions can be provided to a user to facilitate their navigation activities.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

ascertaining whether a user-entered query is more than one word;

if the user-entered query is not more than one word, ascertaining whether the user-entered query is prefixed with at least one of a protocol string or a uniform resource identifier (URI);

if the user-entered query is not more than one word and is prefixed with at least one of the protocol string or the URI, returning results using a first method;

if the user-entered query is not more than one word and is not prefixed with the protocol string or the URI, returning results using a second different method; and

if the user-entered query is more than one word, returning results using the second different method.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein said results are associated with different types.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the first method strips a query word of protocol prefixes in order to perform a prefix string match against a destination'"'"'s stripped uniform resource locator (URL).

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 3, wherein the first method returns results that are associated with one or more history types, favorites types, RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed (uniform resource locator) URL types.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the second method does not make changes to one or more query words and utilizes word breaking.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 5, wherein the second method returns results associated with one or more history types, favorites types, RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed URL types.

The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the first method strips a query word of protocol prefixes in order to perform a prefix string match against a destination'"'"'s stripped uniform resource locator (URL), wherein the second method does not make changes to one or more query words and utilizes word breaking, and wherein the first and second methods return results associated with one or more history types, favorites types, RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed URL types.

8. One or more computer-readable storage media comprising computer-readable instructions stored thereon that, responsive to execution by a processor, perform a method comprising:

ascertaining whether a user-entered query is more than one word;

if the user-entered query is not more than one word, ascertaining whether the user-entered query is prefixed with at least one of a protocol string or a uniform resource identifier (URI);

if the user-entered query is not more than one word and is prefixed with at least one of the protocol string or the URI, returning results using a first method;

if the user-entered query is not more than one word and is not prefixed with the protocol string or the URI, returning results using a second different method; and

if the user-entered query is more than one word, returning results using the second different method.

9. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 8, wherein said results are associated with different types.

10. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 8, wherein the first method strips a query word of protocol prefixes in order to perform a prefix string match against a destination'"'"'s stripped uniform resource locator (URL).

11. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 10, wherein the first method returns results that are associated with one or more history types, favorites types, RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed (uniform resource locator) URL types.

12. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 8, wherein the second method does not make changes to one or more query words and utilizes word breaking.

13. The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 12, wherein the second method returns results associated with one or more history types, favorites types, RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed URL types.

The one or more computer-readable storage media of claim 8, wherein the first method strips a query word of protocol prefixes in order to perform a prefix string match against a destination'"'"'s stripped uniform resource locator (URL), wherein the second method does not make changes to one or more query words and utilizes word breaking, and wherein the first and second methods return results associated with one or more history types, favorites types, RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed URL types.

15. A computing device comprising:

at least a memory and a processor to implement a web application, the web application configured to;

ascertain whether a user-entered query is more than one word;

if the user-entered query is not more than one word, ascertain whether the user-entered query is prefixed with at least one of a protocol string or a uniform resource identifier (URI);

if the user-entered query is not more than one word and is prefixed with at least one of the protocol string or the URI, return results using a first method;

if the user-entered query is not more than one word and is not prefixed with the protocol string or the URI, return results using a second different method; and

if the user-entered query is more than one word, return results using the second different method.

16. The computing device of claim 15, wherein said results are associated with different types.

17. The computing device of claim 15, wherein the first method strips a query word of protocol prefixes in order to perform a prefix string match against a destination'"'"'s stripped uniform resource locator (URL).

18. The computing device of claim 17, wherein the first method returns results that are associated with one or more history types, favorites types, RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed (uniform resource locator) URL types.

19. The computing device of claim 15, wherein the second method does not make changes to one or more query words and utilizes word breaking.

20. The computing device of claim 19, wherein the second method returns results associated with one or more history types, favorites types, RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed URL types.
