Abstract

Various embodiments provide a Web browser that employs a relevancy algorithm to make an educated guess as to the likelihood of a user'"'"'s intended destination when the user begins to enter text into a browser'"'"'s address bar. In one or more embodiments, the relevancy algorithm employs various parameters and assigns weights to the parameters to arrive at a collection of suggestions to provide to the user. By using various rules, associated weightings, and the relevancy algorithm, relevant suggestions can be provided to a user to facilitate their navigation activities.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

ascertaining a number of words in a user-entered query;

responsive to ascertaining that the user-entered query is not more than one word and begins with at least one protocol prefix,

returning relevant results using a confident method, the confident method configured to strip the user-entered query of the protocol prefix in order to perform a prefix string match against a destination'"'"'s stripped uniform resource locator (URL), the confident method configured to calculate the relevant results using RSS feeds and feed items metadata, the RSS feeds and feed items metadata in the confident method comprising at least two of a stripped URL, feed title, feed name, item title, item content, and item author; and

responsive to ascertaining that the user-entered query is at least two words or that the user-entered query is one word and does not begin with the protocol prefix, returning relevant results using a search method that is different than the confident method, the search method configured to perform no changes to the user-entered query, use word breaking on words of the user-entered query, and calculate the relevant results using RSS feeds and feed items metadata, the RSS feeds and feed items metadata in the search method comprising at least two of a host, path and query, feed title, feed name, item title, item content, and item author.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein said relevant results are associated with different types.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the confident method is configured to return relevant results that are associated with the one or more RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed URL types.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the search method does not make changes to words of the user-entered query.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the search method is configured to return relevant results associated with one or more RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed URL types.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein a top-level domain included in the user-entered query is not considered a word when ascertaining the number of words in the user-entered query.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein the search method is configured to utilize word breaking on the user-entered query.

8. One or more computer-readable storage devices comprising computer-readable instructions stored thereon that, responsive to execution by a processor, perform a method comprising:

ascertaining a number of words in a user-entered query;

responsive to ascertaining that the user-entered query is not more than one word and begins with at least one protocol prefix, returning relevant results using a confident method, the confident method configured to strip the user-entered query of the protocol prefix in order to perform a prefix string match against a destination'"'"'s stripped uniform resource locator (URL), the confident method configured to calculate the relevant results using RSS feeds and feed items metadata, the RSS feeds and feed items metadata in the confident method comprising at least two of a stripped URL, feed title, feed name, item title, item content, and item author; and

responsive to ascertaining that the user-entered query is at least two words or that the user-entered query is one word and does not begin with the protocol prefix, returning relevant results using a search method that is different than the confident method, the search method configured to perform no changes to the user-entered query, use word breaking on words of the user-entered query, and calculate the relevant results using RSS feeds and feed items metadata, the RSS feeds and feed items metadata in the search method comprising at least two of a host, path and query, feed title, feed name, item title, item content, and item author.

9. The one or more computer-readable storage devices of claim 8, wherein said relevant results are associated with different types.

10. The one or more computer-readable storage devices of claim 8, wherein the confident method is configured to return relevant results that are associated with one or more RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed URL types.

11. The one or more computer-readable storage devices of claim 8, wherein the search method does not make changes to words of the user-entered query.

12. The one or more computer-readable storage devices of claim 8, wherein the search method is configured to return relevant results associated with one or more RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed URL types.

13. The one or more computer-readable storage devices of claim 8, wherein a top-level domain included in the user-entered query is not considered a word when ascertaining the number of words in.

14. The one or more computer-readable storage devices of claim 8, wherein the search method is configured to utilize word breaking on the user-entered query.

15. A computing device comprising:

at least a memory and a processor to implement a web application, the web application configured to;

ascertain a number of words in a user-entered query;

responsive to ascertaining that the user-entered query is not more than one word and begins with at least one protocol prefix, return relevant results using a confident method, the confident method configured to strip the user-entered query of the protocol prefix in order to perform a prefix string match against a destination'"'"'s stripped uniform resource locator (URL), the confident method configured to calculate the relevant results using RSS feeds and feed items metadata, the RSS feeds and feed items metadata in the confident method comprising at least two of a stripped URL, feed title, feed name, item title, item content, and item author; and

responsive to ascertaining that the user-entered query is at least two words or that the user-entered query is one word and does not begin with the protocol prefix, return relevant results using a search method that is different than the confident method, the search method configured to perform no changes to the user-entered query, use word breaking on words of the user-entered query, and calculate the relevant results using RSS feeds and feed items metadata, the RSS feeds and feed items metadata in the search method comprising at least two of a host, path and query, feed title, feed name, item title, item content, and item author.

16. The computing device of claim 15, wherein said relevant results are associated with different types.

17. The computing device of claim 15, wherein the confident method is configured to return relevant results that are associated with the one or more RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed uniform resource locator (URL) types.

18. The computing device of claim 15, wherein the search method does not make changes to words of the user-entered query.

19. The computing device of claim 18, wherein the search method is configured to return relevant results associated with one or more RSS Feed types, Feed Item types, or Typed URL types.

20. The computing device of claim 15, wherein a top-level domain included in the user-entered query is not considered a word when ascertaining the number of words in the user-entered query.
