Abstract

Systems and methods for enabling efficient wireless power transfer, and charging of devices and batteries, in a manner that allows freedom of placement of the devices or batteries in one or multiple (e.g., one, two or three) dimensions. In accordance with various embodiments, applications include inductive or magnetic charging and power, and wireless powering or charging of, e.g., mobile, electronic, electric, lighting, batteries, power tools, kitchen, military, medical or dental, industrial applications, vehicles, trains, or other devices or products. In accordance with various embodiments, the systems and methods can also be generally applied, e.g., to power supplies or other power sources or charging systems, such as systems for transfer of wireless power to a mobile, electronic or electric device, vehicle, or other product.

Claims

1. A system for contextually-aware wireless power transfer, comprising:

a base unit having one or more transmitter coils;

one or more components including a ferromagnetic, ferrite, or other magnetic material or layers, that modify the magnitude and/or phase of an electromagnetic field and/or corresponding magnetic flux in one or multiple dimensions and/or to guide the magnetic flux in such a manner as to create a preferential path for flux flow in one or multiple dimensions; and

wherein, when vehicles, mobile devices, cases, skins, battery doors, dongles, or batteries having one or more receiver coils or receivers associated with, are placed in proximity to the base unit, the transmitter coil is used to inductively generate a current in the receiver coils or receivers associated with the vehicles, mobile devices, cases, skins, battery doors, dongles, or batteries, to charge or power the vehicles, mobile devices, cases, skins, battery doors, dongles, or batteries, and at the same time the system perform one or more context-aware action.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the context-aware action includes synchronizing, downloading or uploading or otherwise communicating data between the base unit and/or the vehicles, mobile devices, cases, skins, battery doors, dongles, or batteries or a remote or local other device or system.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the context-aware action includes communicating between one or more of the base unit and vehicles, mobile devices, cases, skins, battery doors, dongles, or batteries and a network.

The system of claim 1, wherein the context-aware action includes requesting data be stored at one or more of the base unit and the vehicles, mobile devices, cases, skins, battery doors, dongles, or batteries, or at other vehicles, mobile devices, cases, skins, battery doors, dongles, or batteries.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the mobile device is a music, video, display or other media device, and the context-aware action includes communicating with a speaker or other audio device to play music or display or play video or other media.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the mobile device is a telecommunication device that can handle telephone calls, and the context-aware action includes routing a telephone call from the mobile device to another electronic device or vehicle or transport system.

The system of claim 1, wherein the base unit is incorporated into an automobile, bus, motorcycle, truck, train, airplane, boat or ship or other transport system or vehicle, and wherein the context-aware action includes modifying the automobile, vehicle bus, motorcycle, truck, train, airplane, boat or ship or other transport system or vehicle environment.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the base unit and/or the one or more vehicles, mobile devices, cases, skins, battery doors, dongles, or batteries performs a method for supporting multiple different charging protocols.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the base unit can charge or power a plurality of vehicles, mobile devices, cases, skins, battery doors, dongles, or batteries simultaneously, including use of different charging protocols.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the system is configured as a multi-protocol system for use with different communication and/or control protocols, or different means of communication.

11. A method of providing contextually-aware wireless power transfer, comprising:

providing a base unit having one or more transmitter coils;

providing one or more components including a ferromagnetic, ferrite, or other magnetic material or layers, that modify the magnitude and/or phase of an electromagnetic field and/or corresponding magnetic flux in one or multiple dimensions and/or to guide the magnetic flux in such a manner as to create a preferential path for flux flow in one or multiple dimensions; and

wherein, when vehicles, mobile devices, cases, skins, battery doors, dongles, or batteries having one or more receiver coils or receivers associated with, are placed in proximity to the base unit, the transmitter coil is used to inductively generate currents in the receiver coils or receivers associated with the vehicles, mobile devices, cases, skins, battery doors, dongles, or batteries, to charge or power the vehicles, mobile devices, cases, skins, battery doors, dongles, or batteries, and at the same time performing one or more context-aware actions.
