Abstract

One embodiment relates to a hybrid vehicle drive system for a vehicle comprising a first prime mover, a first prime mover driven transmission, a rechargeable power source, and a PTO. The hybrid vehicle drive system further includes a hydraulic motor in direct or indirect mechanical communication with the PTO and an electric motor in direct or indirect mechanical communication with the hydraulic motor. The electric motor can provide power to the prime mover driven transmission and receive power from the prime mover driven transmission through the PTO. The hydraulic motor can provide power to the prime mover driven transmission and receive power from the prime mover driven transmission through the PTO.

Claims

1. A vehicle drive system for a vehicle comprising a first prime mover, a first prime mover driven transmission, a rechargeable energy source, and a PTO, the vehicle drive system comprising:

a hydraulic pump in direct or indirect mechanical communication with the PTO, the hydraulic pump having a through-shaft; and

an electric motor in direct or indirect mechanical communication with the hydraulic pump, wherein the electric motor is mounted on an end of the through-shaft, wherein the electric motor can receive power from the first prime mover driven transmission through the PTO, wherein the hydraulic pump can receive power from the electric motor when the electric motor rotates, the electric motor using power from the rechargeable energy source, or from the first prime mover driven transmission through the PTO to rotate.

The vehicle drive system of claim 1, wherein the rechargeable energy source is recharged when the vehicle in motion, the rechargeable energy source being charged by the first prime mover using power transferred from the first prime mover to the first prime mover driven transmission, the power further transmitted through the PTO to the through-shaft rotating the electric motor, which transfers power to the rechargeable energy source.

The vehicle drive system of claim 1, wherein the rechargeable energy source is recharged when the vehicle is stationary, the rechargeable energy source being charged by the first prime mover using power transferred from the first prime mover to the first prime mover driven transmission, the power further transmitted through the PTO to the through-shaft rotating the electric motor, which transfers power to the rechargeable energy source.

4. The vehicle drive system of claim 1, wherein the hydraulic pump is a high output hydraulic pump.

5. The vehicle drive system of claim 1, further comprising a hydraulic accumulator in fluid communication with the hydraulic pump.

6. The vehicle drive system of claim 1, wherein the hydraulic is a load sense pump.

7. The vehicle system of claim 6, wherein the hydraulic pump can receive power from the first prime mover driven transmission through the PTO for the hydraulic accumulator.

8. The vehicle drive system of claim 1, further comprising a clutch disposed between the PTO and the hydraulic pump, the clutch being coupled to the through-shaft and configured to disengage the PTO from the hydraulic pump.

9. The vehicle drive system of claim 8, wherein the clutch is integrated with the PTO.

10. A hybrid vehicle drive system for use with a first prime mover and a first transmission driven by the first prime mover, the system comprising:

a second prime mover coupled to a rechargeable energy source;

a component, wherein the first prime mover is configured to provide power through the first transmission and the component is configured to operate the second prime mover via a through-shaft; and

an accessory having the through-shaft, the second prime mover mounted on the end of the through-shaft, the accessory operable through the operation of the second prime mover, wherein the accessory is a hydraulic pump and is communicatively coupled to a second rechargeable energy source and wherein the component is a truck power take off.

11. The hybrid vehicle drive system according to claim 10, further comprising a clutch coupled to the component.

12. The hybrid vehicle drive system according to claim 10, wherein the second prime mover operates the accessory when the first prime mover is off for idle reduction.

13. The hybrid vehicle drive system according to claim 10, wherein the accessory is coupled to a hydraulic accumulator.

14. A method of operating a hybrid vehicle drive system includes a first prime mover, a first prime mover driven transmission, a second prime mover, a PTO component operable to transfer power from the prime mover driven transmission to the second prime mover, a first energy source operable to provide power to or be powered by the second prime mover, the method comprising:

powering an accessory through the operation of the second prime mover, the accessory having a through-shaft, wherein the second prime mover is mounted on an end of the through-shaft.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising powering the second prime mover through operation of the accessory.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising engaging or disengaging the PTO component from the prime mover driven transmission when portions of the vehicle drive system other than the prime mover do not require or can be damaged by a connection to the prime mover.

17. The method of claim 14, further comprising using a clutch to disengage or engage the PTO component from the first prime mover driven transmission.

18. The method of claim 14, further comprising operating the first prime mover to simultaneously provide power to a drive shaft and operating the second prime mover through the prime mover driven transmission.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein the PTO is disengaged from the prime mover during driving.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein the accessory is powered by the second prime mover when the vehicle is stopped without power from the first prime mover and a clutch disengages the PTO from the second prime mover when the second prime mover powers the accessory.
