Abstract

A method and apparatus are provided for controlling power in a wireless power transmission/reception system. The method includes receiving power information from a receiver entering a charging area; determining whether power can be supplied to the receiver, based on the power information; and if the power can be supplied to the receiver, transmitting, to the receiver, a response indicating that the power can be supplied to the receiver.

Claims

1. A method for managing wireless power at an electronic device, the method comprising:

receiving power information from a receiver entering a charging area;

determining whether power can be supplied to the receiver, based on the power information; and

if the power can be supplied to the receiver, transmitting, to the receiver, a response indicating that the power can be supplied to the receiver.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the response includes information about an available quantity power of the electronic device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the response includes a total power quantity capable of being supplied to the receiver from the electronic device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining whether the power of the receiver can be supplied to the receiver comprises:

determining remaining power of the electronic device; and

determining whether the remaining power is larger than power to be supplied to the receiver.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising, if the remaining power is larger than the power to be supplied to the receiver, determining that the power of the receiver can be supplied to the receiver.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising, if the remaining power is not larger than the power to be supplied to the receiver, determining that the power of the receiver cannot be supplied to the receiver.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising, if the power cannot be supplied to the receiver, transmitting a request to wait for another response from the electronic device.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

identifying a total power quantity capable of being supplied to the receiver from the electronic device; and

determining whether the total power quantity is larger than the power to be supplied to the receiver.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising, if the total power quantity is 20 larger than the power to be supplied to the receiver, determining that the power of the receiver can be supplied to the receiver.

10. An electronic device for managing wireless power, the electronic device comprising:

a transceiver configured to receive power information from a receiver entering a charging area; and

a processor configured to;

determine whether power of the receiver can be supplied to the receiver, based on the power information, and

control the transceiver to transmit, to the receiver, a response indicating that the power can be supplied to the receiver, if the power can be supplied to the receiver.

11. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein the response includes information about an available quantity power of the electronic device.

12. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein the response includes a total power quantity capable of being supplied to the receiver from the electronic device.

13. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein the processor is further configured to determine remaining power of the electronic device, and determine whether the remaining power is larger than power to be supplied to the receiver.

14. The electronic device of claim 13, wherein the processor is further configured to determine that the power can be supplied to the receiver, if the remaining power is larger than the power to be supplied to the receiver.

15. The electronic device of claim 13, wherein the processor is further configured to determine that the power cannot be supplied to the receiver, if the remaining power is not larger than the power to be supplied to the receiver.

16. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein the processor controls the transceiver to transmit a request to wait for another response from the electronic device, if the power cannot be supplied to the receiver.

17. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the processor is further configured to identify a total power quantity capable of being supplied to the receiver from the electronic device, and determine whether the total power quantity is larger than the power to be supplied to the receiver.

18. The electronic device of claim 17, wherein the processor is further configured to determine that the power can be supplied to the receiver, if the total power quantity is larger than the power to be supplied to the receiver.

19. A method for receiving wireless power at an electronic device, the method comprising:

transmitting power information to a transmitter;

receiving a response indicating that power can be supplied to the electronic device; and

receiving the power from the transmitter.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the response includes information about an available quantity power of the transmitter.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the response includes a total power quantity capable of being supplied to the electronic device from the transmitter.

22. The method of claim 19, further comprising, if the power cannot be supplied to the electronic device, waiting for another response from the transmitter.

23. An electronic device for receiving wireless power, the electronic device comprising:

a transceiver configured to transmit power information to a transmitter; and

a processor configured to;

control the transceiver to receive a response indicating that power can be supplied to the electronic device, and

control the transceiver to receive the power from the transmitter.

24. The electronic device of claim 23, wherein the response includes information about an available quantity power of the transmitter.

25. The electronic device of claim 23, wherein the response includes a total power quantity capable of being supplied to the electronic device from the transmitter.

26. The electronic device of claim 23, wherein the processor is further configured to wait for another response from the transmitter, if the power cannot be supplied to the electronic device.

27. A method for managing wireless power at an electronic device, the method comprising:

receiving power information transmitted from a receiver in a charging area of the electronic device;

determining whether the electronic device is capable of supplying power to the receiver, based on the power information; and

if the electronic device is not capable of supplying the power to the receiver, transmitting, to the receiver, a message requesting the receiver to wait for another message from the electronic device.

28. The method of claim 27, further comprising receiving charging power information from one or more registered receivers included in the charging area.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein determining whether the electronic device is capable of supplying the power to the receiver comprises:

calculating remaining power of the electronic device, based on the charging power information; and

determining whether the remaining power is larger than power to be supplied to the receiver.

30. The method of claim 29, further comprising determining that the electronic device is capable of supplying the power to the receiver, if the remaining power is larger than the power to be supplied to the receiver.

31. The method of claim 29, further comprising determining that the electronic device is not capable of supplying the power to the receiver, if the remaining power is not larger than the power to be supplied to the receiver.

32. A method for receiving wireless power at an electronic device, the method comprising:

transmitting power information to a transmitter;

receiving, from the transmitter, a first message requesting the electronic device to wait for a second message from the transmitter; and

waiting for the second message from the transmitter.

33. The method of claim 32, further comprising stopping the waiting for the second message after receiving a third message from the transmitter.

34. The method of claim 32, further comprising:

receiving the second message indicating that the power can be supplied to the electronic device from the transmitter; and

receiving the power from the transmitter.

35. A method for receiving wireless power at an electronic device, the method comprising:

transmitting power information to a transmitter;

receiving charging power information from one or more registered electronic devices included in the charging area;

determining whether the transmitter is capable of supplying power, based on the charging power information; and

if the transmitter is capable of supplying the power, waiting to receive, from the transmitter, a message indicating that the transmitter is capable of supplying the power.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein the charging power information is broadcast from the one or more registered electronic device.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein determining whether the transmitter is capable of supplying the power comprises:

calculating remaining power of the transmitter, based on the charging power information; and

determining whether the remaining power is larger than power to be supplied to the electronic device.

38. The method of claim 37, further comprising determining that the transmitter is capable of supplying the power, if the remaining power is larger than the power to be supplied to the electronic device.

39. The method of claim 38, further comprising determining that the transmitter is not capable of supplying the power, if the remaining power is not larger than the power to be supplied to the electronic device.

40. An electronic device for managing wireless power, the electronic device comprising:

a transceiver configured to transmit power information to a transmitter in a charging area, wherein the transmitter supplies wireless power; and

a processor configured to;

control the transceiver to receive charging power information from one or more registered transmitters included in the charging area,

determine whether the transmitter is capable of supplying power to the electronic device, based on the charging power information, and

if the transmitter is not capable of supplying the power, wait to receive, from the transmitter, a message indicating that the transmitter is capable of supplying the power.

41. The electronic device of claim 40, wherein the processor is further configured to:

calculate remaining power of the transmitter, based on the charging power information,

determine whether the remaining power is larger than power to be supplied to the electronic device, and

determine that the transmitter is capable of supplying the power to the electronic device, if the remaining power is larger than the power to be supplied to the electronic device.

42. The electronic device of claim 41, wherein the processor is further configured to determine that the transmitter is not capable of supplying the power to the electronic device, if the remaining power is not larger than the power to be supplied to the electronic device.
