Abstract

A method and apparatus are provided for controlling power in a wireless power transmission/reception system. The method includes receiving power information from a receiver entering a charging area; determining whether power can be supplied to the receiver, based on the power information; and if the power can be supplied to the receiver, transmitting, to the receiver, a response indicating that the power can be supplied to the receiver.

Claims

1. A method for controlling wireless power at an electronic device, the method comprising:

receiving power information from a receiver within a charging area;

determining whether power is available to the receiver, based on the power information; and

if the power is available to the receiver, transmitting, to the receiver, a response indicating that the power is available to the receiver.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the response includes information about an amount of available power of the electronic device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the response includes a total power quantity capable of being supplied to the receiver from the electronic device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining whether the power is available to the receiver comprises:

identifying remaining power of the electronic device; and

determining whether the remaining power is larger than available power for charging the receiver.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising, if the remaining power is larger than the available power for charging the receiver, determining that the power is available to the receiver.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising, if the remaining power is not larger than the available power for charging the receiver, determining that the power is not available to the receiver.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising, if the power is not available to the receiver, transmitting a request to wait for another response from the electronic device.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

identifying a total amount of power capable of being supplied to the receiver from the electronic device; and

determining whether the total amount of power is larger than available power for charging the receiver.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising, if the total amount of power is larger than the available power for charging the receiver, determining that the power is available to the receiver.

10. An electronic device for controlling wireless power, the electronic device comprising:

a transceiver; and

a processor configured to;

control to the transceiver to receive power information from a receiver within a charging area,

determine whether power is available to the receiver, based on the power information, and

control the transceiver to transmit, to the receiver, a response indicating that the power is available to the receiver, if the power is available to the receiver.

11. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein the response includes an amount of available power of the electronic device.

12. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein the response includes a total amount of power capable of being supplied to the receiver from the electronic device.

13. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein the processor is further configured to:

identify remaining power of the electronic device, and

determine whether the remaining power is larger than available power for charging the receiver.

14. The electronic device of claim 13, wherein the processor is further configured to determine that the power is available to the receiver, if the remaining power is larger than the available power for charging the receiver.

15. The electronic device of claim 13, wherein the processor is further configured to determine that the power is not available to the receiver, if the remaining power is not larger than the available power for charging the receiver.

16. The electronic device of claim 10, wherein the processor controls the transceiver to transmit a request to wait for another response from the electronic device, if the power is not available to the receiver.

17. The electronic device of claim 16, wherein the processor is further configured to:

identify a total amount of power capable of being supplied to the receiver from the electronic device, and

determine whether the total amount of power is larger than available power for charging the receiver.

18. The electronic device of claim 17, wherein the processor is further configured to determine that the power is available for charging the receiver, if the total amount of power is larger than the available power for charging the receiver.

19. A method for receiving wireless power at an electronic device, the method comprising:

transmitting power information to a transmitter;

if it is determined that there is available power of the transmitter for charging the electronic device, based on the power information, receiving a response indicating that there is the available power of the transmitter for charging the electronic device; and

receiving the power from the transmitter.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the response includes information about an amount of the available power of the transmitter.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the response includes a total amount of power capable of being supplied to the electronic device from the transmitter.

22. The method of claim 19, further comprising, if there is not the available power for charging the electronic device, waiting for another response from the transmitter.

23. An electronic device for receiving wireless power, the electronic device comprising:

a transceiver configured to transmit power information to a transmitter; and

a processor configured to;

if it is determined that there is available power of the transmitter for charging the electronic device, based on the power information, control the transreceiver to receive a response indicating that there is the available power of the transmitter for charging the electronic device, and

control the transceiver to receive the available power from the transmitter.

24. The electronic device of claim 23, wherein the response includes an amount of the available power of the transmitter.

25. The electronic device of claim 23, wherein the response includes a total amount of power capable of being supplied to the electronic device from the transmitter.

26. The electronic device of claim 23, wherein the processor is further configured to wait for another response from the transmitter, if there is not the available power for charging the electronic device.
