Abstract

Aspects discussed herein relate to systems, apparatuses, and methods to determine when a user remains engaged or stops paying attention to a content item. In response, a snapshot of the user'"'"'s activity and environment may be obtained to ascertain the reason the user stopped paying attention. If the user stopped paying attention as a result of being uninterested in the content item, the system may replace the content item, such as an advertisement, with a different content item to regain the user'"'"'s attention. Further, demographic information and the user'"'"'s interests may be updated for use in scheduling future content items.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

determining, by a computing device, during presentation of a first content item to a user, that the user is in a non-consumption state;

determining, in response to determining that the user is in the non-consumption state, a user interest level in the first content item based at least in part on an event associated with the non-consumption state;

determining whether the user interest level meets a criterion; and

causing, responsive to a determination that the user interest level meets the criterion, a second content item to be presented to the user.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the determination that the user interest level meets the criterion comprises a determination that the user interest level is less than a threshold.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

determining, by the computing device, during presentation of the second content item to the user, that the user is in another non-consumption state;

determining a user interest level in the second content item based at least in part on an environmental event associated with the another non-consumption state; and

in response to determining that the user interest level is greater or equal to a threshold, continuing to provide the second content item to the user.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the second content item comprises a different topic than the first content item.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

selecting the second content item based on a group interest score of a group in which the user is a member.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the user interest level further comprises determining a user interest level in a topic of the first content item based on a user habit of ignoring the event.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the event is an incoming mobile phone communication or a doorbell ring.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

updating a group interest level in a topic comprising the first content item based on the user interest level, wherein the group interest level is associated with a group of users including the user.

9. A method comprising:

monitoring, by a computing device, whether a user is in a non-consumption state in relation to a first content item being provided to the user;

in response to determining that the user is in the non-consumption state, determining, by the computing device, a timeframe based on a time at which the user entered the non-consumption state; and

capturing activity data and environmental data associated with the user that occurred during the timeframe.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein monitoring whether the user is in the non-consumption state comprises:

collecting user data from a variety of sensor devices; and

determining whether the user is positioned to view the first content item based on the user data.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the timeframe occurs prior to the time at which the user entered the non-consumption state.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the timeframe extends for a preset time period.

13. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

in response to the capturing, providing a second content item to the user in place of the first content item.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

after providing the second content item to the user, determining whether the user is in the non-consumption state.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein the activity data comprises an indication of a website accessed by the user.

16. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

receiving the environmental data from a security system of a residence of the user.

17. A method comprising:

receiving, by a computing device, activity data and environmental data associated with a user;

determining, based on the activity data, whether the user is consuming a content item provided to the user; and

in response to determining that the user is not consuming the content item, determining a user interest level in a topic of the content item based at least in part on a response of the user to an environmental event.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising adjusting the user interest level based on the activity data.

19. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

selecting a different content item having a different topic to provide to the user in place of the content item.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

updating a user group interest level in the topic based on the user interest level in the topic.
