Rembrandt Social Media, a subsidiary of Rembrandt Technologies, filed suit against Facebook alleging that Facebook’s “Like” button and other content-sharing features, infringe two patents related to cataloging networked objects of interest to a user, similar to a personal web page diary (6,415,316 and 6,289,362). The suit, filed Feb. 4 in the District of Virginia, also names AddThis, a  social networking company and early partner of Facebook, for infringement of the ‘362 patent through the company’s website “Share” feature. The suit further alleges that infringement of the ’362 patent is based on the same transactions and occurrences. This is the first time Rembrandt has asserted the patents-in-suit, which were invented by deceased Dutch inventor Joannes J.E. Van Der Meer in 1998, five years before Facebook was created. According to the complaint, Rembrandt is the owner by assignment of the patents-in-suit.
