Eclipse IP Sues Google over Waze App

January 2, 2014

Google was sued by Eclipse IP. The majority of Eclipse’s prior litigations have asserted patents related to tracking notifications for deliveries but this new suit involves a patent that has been involved in one earlier case, filed in June 2013 against retailer Sears. The patent-in-suit relates to providing location-based advertising to users (8,068,037) and the Waze app, acquired by Google in 2013, is accused of infringing the asserted patents by advertising nearby businesses to users. Eclipse’s patents were developed by inventor/attorney Scott Horstmeyer. The entity also has a large ongoing campaign against companies that provide location-based tracking services, with more than 80 cases filed to date. 12/27, Central District of California, 12:13cv09502
